I am just wondering what is the difference between severe and profound.
Some doctors say i have a severe hearing loss in both ears sometimes they say profound. is it both the same really?
I have been aided since 14 months of age, i recieved a cochlear implant at 10 years as my hearing was getting worse. apparently i had "too much hearing" at five year old with my hearing aids . i now have a left cochlear implant and a right side hearing aid and love them both. but with just my hearing aid i cannot hear the phone ring. my hearing aid is on the highest and loudest programme possible.

The difference is basically the db loss you have. Profound hearing loss meaning you can only hear sounds 90db and above. Severe is 71db to 90db. :)

Here is a good site that explains the losses

Ranges of Hearing Loss ~ Audiology Awareness Campaign

I was always called profound-severe because my hearing loss was a downward sloping loss. So for some tones I was in the moderate all the way to the profound range. If you had a copy of your audiogram, it is easier to understand.

6 years ago, I did not qualify for a CI because I had too much speech recognication. So it just depends on the loss.

When they give us hearing tests, they test a range of sound frequencies. It could be that you were severely deaf for some frequencies and profoundly deaf on others. I was described as borderline severe/profound for that reason.

It sounds like you have a progressive loss. You might want to get the ear with the hearing aid retested just to ensure that you haven't had a change in hearing status in that ear. When you first got the aid, were you able to hear the phone ring?

I always think of severe loss as in you can still hear some things but not everything, but profound you hear almost to completely nothing... eh I don't know. My left ear is VERY profound (hear 100% nothing in left ear); right is severe-profound and I have a HA in the right ear so I can hear most things, but with the hearing aid off I can hear LOUD things but they sound oh so very quiet to me (like a loud concert, it sounds like a bit above whisper levels to me without the hearing aid)
