Buyers got greedy and didn't want to spend money on clothes. USA workers being greedy demanded higher pay. In turn, manufacturers being greedy didn't want to give up profits so they went overseas where workers were cheaper.
 
In the 1960's our family made do with more hand-me-down clothes, smaller closets, and only buying new clothes when absolutely necessary.

I am wiling to pay more money for clothes that are worth is , I hate wasting money on poor quality clothes . A pair of jeans use to last for years now you're lucky if they last one year .
