Within 4 yrs, i will graduate with teacher degree with mathetic and asl. i am wondering what like to be a teacher in high school? I am interested in your experiences.

Wrong reasons for being a teacher:
1) Money.
2) You love kids.
3) You like the schedule of teaching (especially the summers off) - warning: the schedule is a trick. Good teachers have no time off.
4) You enjoy the subject area.

Right reasons for becoming a teacher?

1) Passion for teaching is a must. Either you have it or you don't.
2) Willingness to give everything you have for one small success without any recognition

Thks and i have to ask why?

Have you been reading any of the education threads? They explain why you are going to need luck, as well as a thick skin, a strong resolve, and the ability to face adversity on a daily basis without loosing your mind. Not to mention being overworked, over stressed, overwhelmed, and underappreciated.

That is all me. I love to teach.

Where have you taught? Loving kids is good, but not a good reason for becoming a teacher.

i teach my friends from around. signs mostly but tutor students math during my senior year in high school.

i knew in my heart that i would be a teacher.

Glad I could brighten your day! God knows, teachers need a good laugh to break the stress levels!

Totally agree with Jillio when says good luck cos you really gonna need it as you will find the real experience of actually teaching in a class is really different from what u are learning at University as they only just scratch the surface.

I found it to be so totally different to what i learnt at University didnt really prepared for the hard slog and ending up soo deep but got thru it with passion and determination and support from one or two staff members so Good luck again

Agreed. Most newly certified teachers hit that classroom the first year after graduation, and the first reaction is "OMG! I have no idea what is going on here." Student teaching requirements help some, but being in that classroom with 30+ students all on your own is overwhelming at times. Add to that the parents and the adminsitration, and it can be mind boggling.

That was how I reacted in my very first classroom with 3 students. Before anyone says that 3 students sounds like a piece of cake...not when they are 4 and 5 years old with no language, have serious emotional and behavioral disorders, have austism, and were always eloping from class. I had no idea what to do!

Like everyone else says..good luck with teaching. A good support system from the administrators and other teachers is very very vital to anyone surviving this career. I think I am burnt out cuz I didnt have a good support system with my aide being absent for more than half of the year and my boss being overwhelmed with other issues to help out much. My boss is really nice but I miss my orginal boss..he always took action for his staff. This boss gets too overwhelmed with everything and has trouble with time management which left many of us without support. I just found out that I will have a better aide this year and I will team teach with a good friend of mine so I think I will have a better year this year than I did in the last 2 years.
