I can't remember station and show but I saw this on TV and it was for an air show. They are not expected to take off that way regularly. This was a demonstration of it can do. I suppose an emergency could arise where they could use that ability.
 
The plane is empty with a couple of pilots and probably doesn't carry full tank of fuel. The lighter the weight, it's possible the plane can take off vertically like this and level off. I don't think they would do this with the full load of passengers and fuel.
 
That takeoff was for the Paris airshow; not the normal family flight. :lol:

Dreamliners are made in North Charleston, SC, not too far from my house. I know several people who work there, including my neighbor across the street.
