Are there any VRS providers or applications available on smartphones that allow a hearing person to call and leave a message in text mode?

I know text messaging and e-mails are easier to use. But, just asking because there are still plenty of hearing folks who don't have text message capabilities and no way for me to hear their voice messages.

Any ideas?

Yes, Google voice will transcribe a voicemail to you. I'm assuming you're not familiar with it so here's how it works.

They call you but you don't answer. So they'll get a voicemail to leave you a message. What they say in the voice mail will be sent to you as a text and you'll be able to read what they say. It's not 100% accurate but it works ok.

I know it's not Email, but you can set it so that they voice message will be sent to you as an Email. In the Email you'd click a link and read the message.

Hope that helps.

My cell phone provider has a voicemail to text service which is for the most part very accurate (90%often 100%). I'm with Rogers (in Canada) and the company that does the voicemail to text is "Spinvox" (ie Dragon Naturally speaking company).

It is MUCH more accurate than Googlevoice at least from what I've seen.
My cell's voicemail-to-text function automatically happens each time I receive a voicemail (I don't have to "do" anything - I just wait a few seconds and I automatically will receive a text message with the text translation of the voice message)

Yes, Dragon's Speech to text "Naturally Speaking" is very good. I have two apps on my iPhone that use it "Dictation and Dragon Search". Google buys so many companies. But I like how google for the most part simplifies things. Their sites, apps and other features aren't all cluttered and focus on what they are suppose to do. So it would be great if google teamed with Dragon.
