Virgin Galactic's suborbital space plane SpaceShipTwo suffered a serious malfunction during a rocket-powered test flight over Mojave, California, today (Oct. 31) resulting in the loss of the spacecraft. The fate of the vehicle's pilot crew is unknown.

The SpaceShipTwo passenger spacecraft experienced an unspecified anomaly after igniting its rocket motor shortly after the vehicle separated from its carrier plane WhiteKnightTwo. The exact nature of the problem has not yet been released.

Im not sure which is safer. The Governments NASA or Private spacecrafts. They're been more accidents by private spacecrafts than NASA. Should government start making laws against companies going into space?

It happens. No experimental test is safe. It has its risks. They knew the risks. They died doing what they loved. Don't forget that many military guys and women die during the trainings. My cousin died during the pilot chopper military training. Another cousin of mine was an aviation pioneer and his name was all over the magazines. He died testing his experimental test, but his ideas never died. Many aviation enthusiasts and pilots still continue to test his ideas to this day. My cousin's death didn't even stop his son from becoming a professional pilot. Yeah, my mom's crazy German family are daredevil and risk takers and they share their love of racing sports cars, sailplanes and planes. Anyway, Look at Wright brothers. They kept trying until they got it right. The government didn't get involved. I'm biased. If the government gets involved, it will hinder innovation.

neither.

uh..... why? are you scared or something?

There has been hundreds and hundreds of spaceflights since the 60's and certainly nothing is perfect. We lost the Challenger and Columbia, as well as some unmanned flights. We need to send supplies up to the space to monitor weather, and other informations as well as ISS.

There will always be malfunctions, and engineers learn something and fix it. The O ring was fixed and the thermal tiles was checked in space after liftoff. They check everything but then anything can go wrong in instant.

I don't know if you're aware of this but governments depend on companies to launch their stuff into space.... and to build spacecrafts for them

wow......shI.T happens...i hope it wasn't a corporates level sabotage.....paranoid thinking or not, even that can happen....i certain hope it wasn't....anyways.....on the other hand though, it can be said that given that space travel on a commercial passenger travel level is still largely on an early stage of progress....so .. a likelihood of this sort of mishap to happen can be quite high.....

If I wanted to see the edge of space, the only program I'd trust getting involved in is flying in a Mig-25 from Russia, nothing else civilian wise would make you feel like you're setting your hair on fire! :P

you kidding right? its a Jet it'd have no means of propellant in space to Get back DOWN
also no jettison micro rockets (unless its modified to have it)

At the edge of space, the engines are huge on the aircraft capable of exceeding mach 3! ;)

yes there is.... scramjet engine but the gravity would take care of the rest. it's not really going into space but just close enough to space.

hmmmmmmm ok
ya BIG jegs on those russians, they always liked BIG BIG BIG, even bigger than USA's jet and space stuffs, even Nukes.....
impressive, hell it would be exhilarating to do Mach 3!

just a slightly cruder technology (or more crude depending how you look at it, example a comparison between the anglo/saxon concorde vs the russian TU144 SS passenger jet....

their avionics....couldn't be a direct copy (lack of spying or something) so they relied on old tech even VALVES and hard wires....!!

didn't know the MIG 25 is a scramjet (are you sure?) if look in the wiki, but yeah..

this is good read....
here

a wee read here

http://tech-beta.slashdot.org/story...-we-might-have-scramjets-sooner-than-expected

scramjets are not here yet.....

and about the 10 fastest planes in the world are here....

COOL!!!
now FF, would you shout me?

Jiro, however edge of space as you say is misleading here.

The edge of space is at 62 miles(380,000 feet) above the earth.
You are not even close at 90,000 feet.
hmmm

thats same said for the jumping off the Balloon at 125,000 + (cant remmy exact ah i think it was 127,000 or there)

it's close enough. obviously.... a plane like that won't even get to 380,000 feet or anywhere close. common sense. it can only take you up there close enough for you to see the space
