A former lieutenant in the Chilean army under Augusto Pinochet will face a civil trial in Florida this month for his involvement in the 1973 murder of Chilean folk singer Víctor Jara, according to the US human rights group bringing the suit.

Jara, also a poet and political activist, inspired generations of artists from U2 to Bruce Springsteen with his lyrical odes to the working class. A communist, he fell afoul of the Chilean government when the leftist president Salvador Allende was overthrown by rightwing Pinochet in a bloody 1973 military coup.

On Monday, June 27, a civil court in Orlando, Florida found Pedro Pablo Barrientos guilty for the murder of Chilean folk musician Victor Jara, which happened 43 years ago. The court ordered Jara's family $28 million in damages. This is an historic decision because it was one of the very rare instances in which victims of human rights abuses sued a perpetrator of the abuse in a U.S. court.

the bloody coup, with american backing, against a lawfully elected president, by open and free elections overthrew allende and installed a dictator who rarely smiled for decades..it happened on 911 too.

its a neat trick though.
america backs the coup against a lawful elected president, who gets murdered along with his family in the presidential palace. if memory serves. he then is replaced by a guy america supported. who in turn orders the murder of this folk singer. along with all kinds of other people, they had a soccer stadium they used to corral those waiting....

decades later the dude who pulled the trigger gets hit with suit...
