I'm wondering how many people actually use sign language.
It's hard to find numbers on the internet, so I will ask the experts...

How many deaf/hoh people around you use ASL only?

As a percentage, and real numbers...

I know signs but I sign SEE, Most people I've seen in the Deaf Community in my hometown signs ASL only without voice, that's because they're older folks, But I'm not sure about the younger folks because they're only involved with sports in the Deaf Community. I haven't seen them hanging or social with the older folks at the Deaf get-together events.

I'm not certain about the percent and numeric of people that knows only ASL, so I cannot comment that.

I use ASL almost all my life.. my parents were deaf.. ASL was my first langauge...

Same here, only I use mostly ASL/SEE now... When I first started learning sign language, it was ASL (wow, just figured it out -- it has been 40 plus years that I have been signing! So Cheri I guess you could put me in the older folk category -- LOL)

Cloggy, I think it depends on where you live -- for example, I live in a city that has 2 oral schools (well, people -- that was in my time), special school district, SSD (mostly SEE), state school for the deaf located 2 hours drive from here (ASL). When I first started using sign language it was almost 100 percent ASL and after more and more children went to SSD, the percentage rate changed completely -- and now, I would say ASL is uh, 25% now, with SEE in the 60-70% and the rest being oral.

ASL is my second language after English. I sign PSE and most deafies I meet either sign ASL or PSE. My hubby sign ASL which is not a problem for me. There was a poll on this subject here a month ago or so.

I do use ASL.

How many Deaf people around me that DO use ASL? 45% of my friends do use ASL (and ARE proud)...
the rest of them use PSE/Contact Signing because they feel the need to impress people with their English fluency which is just plain rubbish.

Thanks sillycat! I shouldn't have posted at that early, early morning hour! I meant PSE not SEE! You and I are in the same shoes -- English (oral school) was my 1st language then I took up ASL in my teens and my husband is ASL too...
