So summer has gone well! and so has my ha! I'm really happy people don't really notice it and stare..but on the other hand if someone does notice they either ask or just kinda smile in understandment..and not pity kind of thing...i saw some kid stare at me the other day..and like right at my ha..but I just smiled cuz i know he was just curious...

So i got my school squared out. My school has a bursary in which they purchase a new fm system and I get to keep it. So for now I'm gonna use the edulink the one they have (i have to wait 2 weeks after school starts to order it cuz of rules or something) and then centre for students with disabilities and my counselor chick is gonna order my the smartlink fm:) I also get note takers for each of my classes...and If i need it i can get a 2nd or 3rd year peer tutor...im semi excited/really nervous though...I'm going into a really big business program and its a big school...how was everyone elses first year?

Glad to hear things are going so well for you. Good luck on starting school. I'm glad you have all of your accommodations in place, and just remember that after the school year starts, if you need something more, just request it.

About notetakers: get someone who is enrolled in the class. They have a better understanding of the curriculum than those from the outside. I should know.

A really good piece of advice!

Someone who is enrolled in the class is at the same level as the student they are taking notes for. I prefer to use a paid notetaker who has already had the class, and has recieved no lower than a B. Also one htat has been trained to take notes not just for themselves, but for another's comprehension. If they have already had the class, there is no problem with understanding the cirriculum.

How many such people would be available? My sister in law use to work as a note taker for deaf students at a time when she had only school qualifications from long ago. She writes well and the school absolutely loves her but I wasn't too impressed. If she's the best they got then what about the others??

Upper classman are available all the time, and actually come in to be trained. During the quarter, their notes are evaluated 3 times and copies of the evaluation are kept in their file. Notetakers are evaluated by the professor, the student, and the person in charge of the notetaking program (which at this time, is me). And if the student complains at any point during the quarter, we find them an alternate notetaker. And I thinkthe student evaluation of the notetaker helps to weed out the ones that aren't working up to the students needs.

It does take some time to get a program like this up and working, though, becasue of the recruitment and the training. But if the campus has a relatively small use for notetakers, it's not too much of a pain.

We use notetakers for other students with various disabilities, though. If you like, I can email you the power point that we use for training.

It's strange because when I was little, for some reason kids noticed my hearing aid a lot, so I didn't wear ponytails too often. When I got older, kids never stared at my hearing aids even in ponytails, so I never cared to wear my hair up often.

When I got my CI, I didn't like wearing my hair up at first, but I ended up getting used to it, so it's cool that I am comfortable now. Most people don't notice my CI either. I wear the color that matches my hair color, so that helps out a lot.

I didn't think you'd have much of a problem, so I am glad it's working out well for ya. Have a great school year.

Ya they do have paid notetakers..but for some reason i think you have to try the students that are in the class to take notes for you first. ..My notetakers is/are all students that are enrolled in the class and have no less than a B..My counselor said i can ask someone or the teacher can do it. But i'd rather the teacher so that they can find a good person instead of me choosing..she was even like "well you can even get one of your friends to do it" but thats a huge no considering they wouldn't take it seriously and would probably doodle on the paper.

I just hope i don't get stuck with someone who is going to half ass it..and if i dont think they are good enough they wont get paid the 25 dollars a course for doing it i think...

That's right. If their notes aren't up to your standards, go back to the disability office and let them know why you are dissatisfied. The ADA does state "qualified notetaker", so I personally refuse to use any student who hasn't been trained specifically to take notes for fomeone with hearing loss. It's really quite a different process, because hearing students are able to hear what's going on in class and are able to relate their notes backto something that was said in lecture. But if the deaf student doesn't hear the same thing, the notes make no sense. A student enrolled in the class works in many situations, but I think a professional, ot at the minimum, an upper clssman who has been trained to take notes for the deaf is much, much better. And professors usually know whothe good students are, but rarely do they know who the good notetakers are. They never see the student's notes.

Another advantage of using a paid notetaker...you have the same notetaker with you in all of your classes, so there isn't several different styles of notetaking for you to try to decipher.

OMG, don't even get me started on how sucky volunteer notetakers are................Seriously.......most of them don't know how to take notes at ALL.

Which is why I insist on pro notetakers for all of my deaf/HOH students.

Ha ha. I hear ya, DD! I have not forgotten the time I got some Chinese guy who barely knew any English to take my notes. I don't care where they come from as long as they can do the job.
