Curtis Fairchild Jones is set to walk free in less than two weeks after being convicted of murder at the age of 12. He and his sister were the youngest children in United States history to be charged as adults for first-degree murder, according to Florida Today.

Florida Today reports Curtis, now 29, and his sister, Catherine Jones, admitted to killing their father’s girlfriend, Sonya Nicole Speights, in 1999. The duo said that they targeted Speights, as well as their father and another male relative, because the three adults were sexually abusing them.

According to interviews and court documents quoted by Florida Today, Catherine Jones, then 13, told Curtis, then 12, about how the male relative watched her in the shower and **********d while she cried. Florida Today reports, "the organization now known as the Department of Children and Families acknowledged signs of sexual abuse but closed the investigation" days later.

After that, Catherine plotted to kill the adults and her brother agreed to help. The duo killed Speights, but not their father and the relative, because they got scared after shooting Speights, according to Florida Today.

Curtis, now an ordained minister, is leaving prison after 17 years. Jones is scheduled for release in a month. The two will be on probation, Florida Today reports.
