One thing I would say, Liebling--there is a difference between meditation and contemplative prayer.


"Pure" meditation is certainly dangerous because it involves basically emptying out the self, and opening oneself to any and every force.


Contemplative prayer involves a similar relaxation and mental focusing, but instead of emptying yourself out, you focus your mind upon God and allow Him to fill you.  Branches of Christianity without a strong monastic tradition (i.e. Protestantism) can be very condemning of contemplative prayer--but it has definitely been practiced successfully by monks and saints (such as Santa Teresa de Avila and San Juan de la Cruz).  It certainly requires care--but if you are sure in your aim to be with God, then you will be able to hear His guidance as to whether or not you should do it, and if yes, He will protect you.
