To the members of this url who have had one... what was it like? Someone I know HATED it, largely because she was seeing a different audiologist to who she usually sees, and the audiologist was playing the bleeps far too loud and only changed things when doing it in her other ear.

A tympanogram doesn't use beeps. It is a test to see if the eardrum has fluid behind it, and it uses air to see if the ear drum is moving. Fluid behind the eardrum will not allow the eardrum to move, and results in a conductive hearing loss....often temporary and related to infection.

I had tympanogram almost every time I took a hearing test. a little painful.. my tympanogram results were normal

They always did one on my son, too, especially if his audiogram showed a drop in what he was hearing or able to discriminate. He was prone to ear infections, so they used the tympanogram to see if infection and fluid were causing the drop from the previous audiogram.

Tympanograms never bothered me. You feel a slight pressure but it never hurt me. I would experience bouts of what sounds like you being under water which was really loud tinnitus, so I had several of them performed which revealed no fluid in the middle ear.

It normally isn't painful. If there is infection present, the burst of air may cause some slight pain. My son never complained that they were painful, either.
