why is TTY and TDD (teletype device for deaf) different? Almost deaf people voted "TTY" instead of TDD. Do you know reason?

No difference really, I remembered back in 80's that it has to do with political corrections to lessen confusion for hearies what is TTY, also to start up Relay services, it is to satisfy Federal requirement to make it clear that it was intended for Deaf hence Telephone Devices for the Deaf... Then they start to subsiding the TDD relay Services.

becuase hearing people don't understand word "Teletypewriter" or "Teletpe" are TTY, people ask what mean mean etc.. they are not deaf, people misunderstand

TDD is Telecommunications device for the deaf, hearing people understand easy!

TTY and TDD are basically the same thing.

Some people say TTY and some say TDD, but both really mean the same thing.

When I first heard about this device, I always heard it referred to as "TTY". A few years later, I started hearing people refer it as "TDD". Now, it varies. Some places in Rochester will leave two phone numbers one for voice and one for TTY or TDD.

i proudly admit that i do say "tty". boy ! it has been long time to say that word. :D

Several government agencies and companies like BellSouth (now AT&T) used "TTD" instead of TTY/TDD.

I used to call it TDD until I realized TTY sounds better.

I agree. Almost deaf people support to choose "TTY" but ADA rule to require "TDD".

Sorry, I M sorry about ADA. ADA said require word of "TTY" or Texttelephone instead of teletype. Not TT

Dbarovian - I guess TTD means teletype for the deaf but I am not sure.

In the United Kingdom, they call it minicom.

TTY and TDD are the same. I don't use tty that much since I got VP. I dislike to dial on relay through tty. It's frustrated to me!

TDD and TTY are both basically the same to me. I still keep mine anyway in case of 911 emgerncy calls for help. Sorenson VRS do not yet have 911 service set up yet until they can get approved by the FCC first. But OJO (SNAPVRS) now already set up 911 emgerncy calls through vrs on OJO. But sometimes you gonna have to keep TTY as a back up when you really need it just in case.

Some deaf friends of mine still keep their TTYs because the cable and electricity to their VPs go out more often than the landline phone lines do. Even if VPs have 911 access that doesn't do any good if there is no electricity.

I suppose one could hope for a quick 911 response from a cell phone or PDA text message but I sure wouldn't depend on that.

I still get calls on my TTY from deaf friends when their VPs and computers are down.

I still keep my tty for emergency either. If I rid of phone house. I will use my cellphone for an emergency.

TTY is the telephone industry acceptable term. It's because not only deaf people use it -- people with speech difficulties use TTY's as well. They're not deaf.
