Hi, my name is Christine and I am hearing...about a year ago I started trying to learn a little bit of asl here and there but now I am getting alot more serious about it. I do not have a teacher, but I can't say I have actualy looked into it just yet. I have been just learning words through websites like aslpro.com, but I am afraid I might be learning the wrong things and am not getting the grammer correctly. Does anyone have any tips for learning asl?

Also I am looking for a friend who is not hearing who I can e-mail or instant messange back and fourth with(preferbly around ages 11-17 (I am 14), I am really interested in getting to know what life is like with out being able to hear.
Hope to talk to you soon,
-Christine

Welcome to AD, Christine! I hope you will enjoy the stay with us.. Happy posting away..

Good luck on learning ASL.. :) :)

:welcome: to AllDeaf! You can become part of the community here too--you don't have to be deaf to get the most out of this forum. I'm hearing and I have over 1,000 posts... LOL

As a hearing person who knows ASL, I can give you a few pointers:

1. DO NOT use your voice when signing. That will screw up your grammar.
2. Make some Deaf friends. Culturally Deaf friends, that is, not just "deaf"--not all deaf people sign, and a few even despise it.
3. Signing in an English word order is called PSE--Pidgin Signed English or Contact Sign. It is NOT real ASL.

I never really took a class--I learned from my ex-girlfriend and by interacting with my Deaf friends. Feel free to PM or IM me if you want to talk to me! :)
