While I'm not a parent and all. I still figured it'd be an interesting discussion to hear how parents handle the whole sorting of candy to make sure it's all safe and such. I always had my parents do it for me as a child, of course now I'm 23 going on 24 and one day I might become a parent.

How do you guys go about it? Stick with strictly well known neighborhoods that you know or only go to peoples houses that you're familar with IE from work or such? Or do you just pick a route and go to every house?

Sorting the candy, how do ya do that one? Look for tampering on wrapers and throw out the home-made stuff ... or?

I always double check the candies before I give to my son.

We will go to TOT this year again...probably more neighborhood to go and enjoy the night. :)

Although I have no children of my own, I would like to add that I miss how things "used to be." Where I grew up, it was perfectly normal to accept home-made treats for Halloween because we knew *everybody* in the town, and there was trust all around. One lady who lived by the school was famous for giving out toffee-covered apples -we'd always stop at her place LAST so we could then sit down and enjoy the apples. Its sad how much things have changed, and how there are some people out there who have no qualms at intentionally trying to hurt children.

I know exactly what you mean Neecy. It's sad how the world changed. Last year police stopped abunch of trick or treaters who had plastic guns thinking they were real...

I will take my son trick or treating at the Monster street. We always go there every year. its more safe as there are cops everywhere. Every Businesses give out candies and there are games too. Seeing alot of people there where everyone know each other. I love it. I cant wait! :)

I haven't yet took my kids Trick or Treating. Was going to last year but it rained so we stayed home. Their still young. But I hope we can this year. I have to work but my wife & my mother are gonna take them. They looked so cute in their costumes last year. My son was a Lion & my daughter was a pumpkin hehe'

Yeah I rather to stick with my area where I know everyone, but we still check the candies, if one of the candy has no wrap on them, we throw it away, we only allow them to eat candies that has wrappers on them...homemade stuff will be thrown out also just to be safe..

Yeah same as usual... I prefer to have my children around in village where I live. My 13 years old son want go to town with his 5 friends where one of his friends live for the change instead of village where most children are around... He said that he feel he is too big for village... He prefer to go next town for the change. I told him it´s okay as long as he is not alone...

Will be new route area.. (cuz new house that why) I'll study route and to see if okay area for my children!

I'll be staying and have trick n treat for young children.. :)
(maybe)

i'm in very small town, so will take kids to trick/treating in my town.. Plus will take them to train halloween, they have friendly halloween decorte there during train, sound fun huh?

trick or treating is very dangerous now days people are very looney now its like they all smoked an permanent crack too much pedo and satanism out there i would only take them trick or treating to someone who i trust family or friends thats it

Last year I did not with my kids I missed them so much. :( Before that I always walked with my kids outside every Halloween night except last year. They were with their mom.

to be honest with you i never like the idea of my kids going trick or treating because I dont like to see my kids eating the candies. But if they want to. I'll respect them and of course its only once a year.... I'll of course inspect the candies to make sure theres nothing that is off. But some people asked me what if they "needle something in the candies" That! I cant answer because I cant tell if they did this or nt. Scary! Use my good judgement or common sense. I usually have my mom and mom in law give the kids the bags of candies or popcorn balls from them.

When I was young, my parents would follow us and make sure we went to properly lighted houses and that they recognized the houses we visited.

When I was old enough for them to trust me, they let me go alone with my brother and friends since they knew that I knew what to watch out for.

Sometimes, my friends and I would communicate a lot on where the best places to go were. There was one house that always had a Halloween party for everyone. They provided free hot dogs and drinks. There was another house that always gave out free sodas (with Mormon pamplets or Jehovah's Witness pamplets). Of course, we just took off the pamplets and threw them away. Some houses gave away full-sized candy bars instead of the holiday-sized ones. Heh!

We take Lilly out in our own neighborhood. We go up our street and back. The street is only two blocks long, and I know pretty much everyone on my street. Then we go to my parents house. The whole family gets together there and takes turns taking all of the kids out in teh neighborhood. I know alot of the people in the neighborhood. Alot of cops from my old police department live in thier neighborhood.
A few years ago, before we had Lilly, I got off work early and went to my parents house. Since I just got off work, I was still in my police inuform. I just kept it on when I took them out. My neices and nephews loved it. They had a police escort when they went door to door. And since there are alot of cops in the area, the kids got alot more candy because I was in uniform.
As far as the candy tampering, just use common sense. If oyu are not 100% sure abou tan individual peice of candy, just throw it away. Besides, you know you will end up eating most of the candy anyway.:giggle:

Saw an interesting show on the History Channel tonight about the history of Haloween. During the show they brought up the whole candy tampering issue. They said that in the 70s' the urban myth of finding razors in candy was not true initially. But a few copy cats did emerge a few year later. So the story about a razor in an apple are true.
They also said there have been a few cases of candy tampering where children have died. BUT, in every case the investigations revealed that the own childs parents poisoned the children. So while there were cases of candy tampering, they were all directd at their own children in an effort to kill them. The have been no random candy tamperings in the US, ever.
