Hi all. I always come here to talk about ASL stuff. Everyone here is so nice :) Anyway, I had a dilemma. I am not terrible at ASL and I love signing with people, but whenever I go to an event, I get super nervous and I can't sign as well. I start signing very slowly and I begin to worry that I'm not doing well enough. Has anyone else had this nervousness before and if you have, what would some of your suggestions be? Even if you haven't been nervous like that before, I would really appreciate the help. Thank you very much :)

Seek out more events and participate more. The more often you do something, the more it becomes second nature to you and you won't be so inhibited.

It is normal, it happens to me sometimes, I was nervous when Iw as chatting to the deaf kids a month ago -- but the confidence improved when I get more 'comfortable' -- it helps, if you just relax and let your hands do the job while you communicate :)

I used to get really nervous! Sometimes, I still do. But once you start a conversation, it's a ton of fun! Just go with the flow. Deaf people don't bite...hard :giggle:

I get nervous within 5 minutes but after that, I sign furiously like one another once the comofrtablity hits me :P

I feel the same way. I seem to hang back and not say too much unless someone introduces me to someone. I get nervous and forget signs that I know! But I've made a promise to myself that the next Deaf event I attend, I will just go up and introduce myself to someone!

I've been signing for almost 3 years and my nerves still get the best of me. Many times it's been thought that I'm a newbie to the language when in reality, i'm not.

I get nervous too because I don't sign as well. After a good number of minutes in, I sign more and learn new signs in meetings.
