I'm ashamed to say it is. If I ever have any kids, they won't be getting their education here. Certainly not like THAT. I'd much rather keep it in HS, where it belongs. I do not think 5th graders to be learning about that. For one, way too young, and for another, just plain morally wrong.

LOL you confused between 5 years old and 5th graders. Its for 5th graders not 5 years old. 5th grader tend to be 11-12 years old.

Whoops. My mistake. I just woke up. Yes, 11-12 years old is still too young. Better in High School, where it's more appropriate for that kind of stuff. Like I said, I strongly object to that-- wouldn't go well with me if I had kids, which I don't have, so I can't object.

But you'll be surprise what kids know today , they only have google something and it at their finger tips . Parent will have to setup their computers to block stuffs they don't want their kids seeing but kids can go a friend house.

Actually, my kids may know so much. I had to sit down, and talked to them about sex thingy. They understand how important about condoms for everything. Of course, i told them, not to try it too early and the rest of the deep details. They seem to know more than what I thought. I pray that they would not try it until age 18 or so.

True. And parental controls on mobile devices that has it, and also, parents should have a say here, too.

Yup! I busted my son checking on porno when he was only 10 years old with his "girlfriend", mind you he was 4th grader.

This is why I was not sure if this is too far or too short. Its better to educate before they start to fool around because once fool around and got something then it may be permanent and education would become moot point afterwards.

Blocking on computer isn't 100% fool-proof!

Teachers taught us about sex education when I was in 5th/6th grade, but I already knew that stuff anyway. I found out voluntarily when I was in 3rd grade from a child friend talking about it. I asked my mom if it was true.. Yes, I did ask mom because she worked in a hospital and always talked about her work over dinners. I guess, we were exposed pretty well. Anyway, She answered my questions frankly. My brother and I watched Blue Lagoon when we were kids. My brother told me himself to not end up like Emmaline giving a birth without any assistance and I didn't hesitate to agree with him. My brother actually made a vow he remained celibate until he got married. We both think Mom let us watch Blue Lagoon on purpose for "education." Well, it sure worked.

My kids took sex ed classes when they are in grade 5 and 6. My kids have already heard others talking deep stuff when they are in grade 7 and 8 from school or outside of school. So, i prefer my kids to know now than later. I remember I knew about it when I was 8 years old. So they need to know.

Education is the key. Barbaro, seems education paid off for you isn't it?

Certainly. For instance, one of my nieces wanted to become a baby doctor when she was seven. She already knew about sex reproduction 'cause she usually hung out at her mother's hospital. Her mother worked as a radiologist. Very tough job. And yep, we did talk about it. Now, my niece will be finishing her PA school next year. After that, she hopes to go to the medical school to become either GP or Ob/Gyn doctor. She even waited until she got married and that was her choice.

I believe that earlier the kids are exposed to hospitals, the better they understand that what medical workers do at hospitals, so kids would not be afraid to ask questions. My family and I are pretty candid when it come to serious subjects without going crazy like "oh, my you can't talk about it! It's taboo!" It's ridiculous.

I am not sure I would want a teacher to teach my child about sex education , I really don't think schools should be teaching sex education with all the news about teachers having sex with their students . The schools are not doing a very good job checking out teachers background. If a parent is too uptight to talk to their kids about sex they can ask their family doctor or nurse to do it.

My son was taught about anatomy, reproduction and STD's by the school in 6th or 7th grade and again in High School. I had already had talks to with him a prior to that though. The High School makes it known to the students that they can get condoms from the school nurse if they need them for safe sex, since many parents don't assist their kids & expect them to just behave as told by their parents.. I made sure my son knows he can come to me with questions or help buying birth control but who knows if he will. As a parent I can only hope he won't need to but we all know what it's like being a teen, it doesn't always go as the parents hope..

If you dont want a teacher to teach your child, sooner or later you are going to have to discuss sex education with your child. Otherwise, Your child is going to find out from other really fast... Personally, I also think the children should be educated about domestic abuse as well. Domestic abuse could lead to all kinds of bad forms. My opinion is that it is the root cause of all problems.

LOL! I am a grandmother so my daughter know all she need to know about sex . I don't think some fifth grade teacher that had no training in sex education should be teaching kids about sex. They could some inject their religion belief into this too or their own sexual hang ups. A teacher told my daughter class that all tall Black men made good basketball players . Some teachers teach kids their own views which are not facts.

Usually it's the school nurse or a trained professional who comes in. The guidance counselor is usually also there. It's not necessarily talking about sex, as it is anatomy (usually the genders are separated). Some parents don't talk to their kids about this and the kids learn about it on the bus. I knew a couple of girls who were so glad they learned about their changing bodies at school because otherwise they would have freaked out when they got their first period. I have been working in the school system for years and I have never once seen a general education teacher teaching sex-education...

Also, if you don't think they should be teaching sex to any one at school, than that pretty much kills most of the Biology subject...kids can dissect a frog but can't tell you what their own body parts function as...perfect
