I posted earlier asking for tinnitus relief because I said it had been picking up. Now, it's continuous. Most of the time it's just and irritant, but I had a really bad experience today which really alarmed me. An intercom came on very loudly... Several hearing people jumped, one fell out of their chair, and I screamed... Loudly. After the intercom cut off, I had the worst tinnitus I've ever had in my life. I was dizzy, had a headache, and just wanted to curl up in a ball.
I have noticed that my hearing aids seem louder to me, and I've heard people's conversations over the phone from 5 feet away in somewhat quiet environment.

Could it be that I had a weird jump in my hearing and I need my hearing aids' volume to be turned down?

And can someone offer some advice so I don't scream again when loud noises literally hit me?

I think you are describing recruitment. I know a person who got a CI when the recruitment was so bad she couldn't stand it.

Welcome to "the club"....have had it so many years I'd be lost without tennitus....

As I'm new to all this, you you please mind defining recruitment for me?

Interestingly, many people with hearing loss report that, as sounds get louder, they abruptly go from being inaudible to painfully loud. This rapid increase in perceived loudness is known as "recruitment" because it is thought to be caused by normal hair cells suddenly being recruited to take over for nearby damaged cells.

I've had a cold for the last week and the other day when I woke up I though that something in the house was making a high pitched whine until I went outside and it didn't go away. So either my tinnitus is getting worse with my cold or my head is about to explode with sinus pressure!

Is recruitment the same thing as hyperacusis? I'm super sensitive to sound as many people with APD are and I've read people calling it hyperacusis.

Should have hit refresh before posting. Thanks Bottesini I see that they are not the same thing.

No. Hyperacusis is a specific thing, and it isn't really just being sensitive to sound.

I had it when I had Ramsay Hunt syndrome with a virus actively damaging my auditory nerve.

The pain was almost indescribable and it made me throw up.

I've been googling and they say no, it isn't. Here's the link..

Yea, I see now that a lot of people seem to be using the word incorrectly. :hmm:

I wish be alcohol!

I think because if you were drinking alcohol, you'd presumably behaving a better time.

yeah alcohol do helps, but if taken with care like, don't whiskey fast, and avoid red with Lots tannins,,,but i noticed it also comes down to how makes it better, i stay away from any cheap wines, and any cheap spirits, ive noticed the costly stuff are much better for tinnitus.

Cheap Reisling and cheap rose are real bad at knocking tinnitus, Cab Sav too heavy... i like Pinot Noir, Shiraz can be too heavy, again it depends on what and who made it, I like the Elephant Hill , Grange, Coopers Creek and a few other bouquet makers..sauvignon blanc always goods, cheap or normal or pricy all pretty safe, chardonnays will trial and error i LOVE buttery and fruity chards buts all depends, its like blind tasting you cant tell til you try it and i often try stay with 'this years favourite - one i tried it and got on ear - id stick with that chard for that year...next year will be different each vintage affect different winerys differently as their micro climates changes (and often stays in for 1 or 2 years)...

just experience.
also im careful to ensure i ate, and wait so long before raiding the cellar...
cheers

you see...
part of having tinnitus is often stress-related alcohol is a muscle -relaxant it takes away tensions, not lower body temperature (often people perceives the opposite is true, where its not), so its partly why i drink to relax, and ease of tinnitus BUT don't go 4 glasses over, because pass that point that's when alcohol flowing and often will bang in blood flow to the ear causing MORE tinnitus...so sip some pace slowly or quaff some then stop and then enjoy cheese and crackers and watch a movie...that's you are supposed to enjoy alcohol.
