Whoooaaa I thought VW Bugs could really float, but combine Cuban ingenuity and a 51 Chevy truck and that makes one hell of a boat.

Unfortunately they failed to make for freedom :( Hope next time they succeed to escape from the Commies.

Freedom Bid in Floating '51 Chevy Truck
Thu Jul 24,12:07 PM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

MIAMI (Reuters) - The 12 Cubans who tried to sail a 1951 Chevy truck from the communist-ruled island to the United States got no marks from U.S. authorities for their creativity.

The would-be emigrants were sent back home.

Since Fidel Castro (news - web sites)'s 1959 revolution, Cubans have tried to leave the Caribbean island on rudimentary rafts, on giant truck inner tubes, in stolen boats and planes, even by windsurfer.

But no one remembers anyone attempting the 90-mile crossing of the Florida Straits in a floating flatbed truck with 55-gallon (250-litre) drums strapped to its sides, tires still in place, a propeller attached to its drive shaft and a driver behind the wheel.

"We've seen surfboards, pieces of Styrofoam, bathtubs, refrigerators. But never an automobile," Coast Guard Petty Officer Ryan Doss said on Thursday.

A U.S. government plane spotted the bright-green truck chugging through the water at 8 mph (13 kph) on July 16 about 40 miles south of Key West, just over halfway from Cuba to Florida. The Cubans had fashioned a makeshift, bright yellow shelter on the truck's bed.

"The truck's engine was actually running, propelling it through the water," Doss said.

The Coast Guard picked up the 12 Cubans from the vintage vehicle and took them back to the island on Sunday.

The truck was deemed a hazard to navigation and was sent to the bottom.

Under the U.S. immigration policy known as "wet foot, dry foot," Cubans who manage to set foot on U.S. soil are usually allowed to stay while those stopped at sea are routinely sent back to Cuba.

I understand what's happening -- it's not only Cuban people doing that route and method. People from neighbouring Malaysia, Singapore -- north of Australia -- are always trying to sneak into Australia by boat, but Australian Government have implemented a security system with the Army and National Guard in preventing immigrants in entering Australian waters. Once immigrants are caught trying to enter Australian waters from International waters, the army police try to get them to turn around and return to where they came from. But if that fails, they herd them up and send them to either Christmas Island or other places within Australia -- either remand or detention centres for some lengths of times, depending on what grounds immigrants were caught on (criminal and drugs imports, or just simply immigrating illegally).

UPDATE:

2 of the Cubans who tried to escape using the Chevy truck are back at it again today!

This time they're using a 1959 BUICK

Still  but I gotta admit their preservance in search of freedom.

MIAMI (Reuters) - A group of Cubans who tried to sail to the United States in a 1959 Buick car fashioned into a boat were intercepted at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites), relatives in Cuba and Cuban exiles said Wednesday.

For four of the 11 people on board, it was not the first thwarted attempt to leave the communist island in a bizarrely converted vintage vehicle.

They had already tried last July to reach Florida in a vessel made from a 1951 Chevy truck, only to be picked up by the Coast Guard and sent home.

The Coast Guard intercepted the bright green Buick-boat on Tuesday during its journey over the 90-mile stretch between Cuba and Florida, exile groups said.

 yes but very creative!!!! gotta hand them that! i dont blame them wanting to escape the communist Cuba in search for some freedom -- its sad tho cuz so many survived yes but so many has also LOST their lives to the sea in their pursuit of freedom -- the ppl there in Cuba should find a way to overthrow Fidel Castro and get him out of the office there -- uhmm since the topic here is ref to Cuba and all -- i wonder whats happened these days with the lil boy Elian Gonzalez who became a well known child who has survived the sea after his mom has died while at sea escaping Cuba -- hes been sent back to Cuba in the custody of his dad for those who might not be familiar with that case

Elian's still in Cuba with his daddy.

Doubt that Elian and his daddy would escape Cuba since Daddy's a die-hard commie AFAIK.

yea still in Cuba but whats HAPPENED to him since his return back to Cuba and his life with the die-hard commie daddy qq thats what i wonder

I think they went back normal life im sure but I dont know what happening with them right now.

yea i just happened to wonder cuz of this thread and bringing up the Cuban's creative minds on various methods of escape -- im sure one day Elian would be back into the spotlight at some point

Yes, Cubans are creative!! I don't blame them for their escaping attempts. Someday, Fidel Castro will either overthrow or retire. I wished that Castro should not overthrow Fulgencio Batista during 1959. Before Castro, Cuba was fine and dandy under Batista's time. After Batista was overthrowed, Cuba never get the same ever since.

It is unfair to other common Cubans, Castro approved HIS own daughter and granddaughter's pleas to escape from Cuba to United States. They live in Georgia or somewhere in US. What's up with that? Gee.

Anyways back on topic about the current escape attempt with the Buick....

If they ever make it to Fla, they should be auditioning for either the TV show "Junkyard Wars" or join "Monster Garage" as Jesse James's guests to show their creativity in combining a car with a boat that would put Jesse's School Bus Pontoon Boat to shame!

But if I was a businessman, I would hire these Cubans quick because they know how to engineer something out of junk very well as the evidence of both the truck and the Buick shows their inventiveness.

yeah amazing how they survive without
food, without bank accounts, without lotions
to protect lots of sunshine, with nothing...

i have to agree with FlyFree that
it is really SAD if they have to go back to Cuba
in the same meantime we have to be very
strict with no more immigrants cuz too many
of our business jobs were taken away
from America mostly went to other countries
especially India ... thats why we have
bad economy here and no more jobs here in
America only because of cheaper labor overseas...
