Depending on who you ask, how often you should bathe can vary, but it’s a fair assumption nobody in the developed world has gone longer in between a good scrubbing as Dave Whitlock.

“I have not taken a shower in over 12 years,” Whitlock told CBS Boston.

That’s right. He’s gone more than 4,000 days without a full-body wash.

Is that gross? No, says Whitlock, who dished the dirt on why his avoidance of showers passes the personal hygiene smell test.

“No one did clinical trials on people taking showers every day,” he said. “So what’s the basis for assuming that that is a healthy practice?”

Whitlock is a chemical engineer and MIT grad, and wanted to prove a simple point.

From CBS Boston:

In fact, what Whitlock does believe is healthy is restoring good bacteria to our skin that our ancestors enjoyed long ago and that has slowly been stripped away by excessive cleaning. To prove his theory, he helped found AOBiome, a company based in Cambridge, MA.

Whitlock’s company created a product called “Mother Dirt,” which is a misting spray containing live bacteria. It’s sprayed directly on the skin twice a day. It’s odorless and feels like water once applied.

“Our users are able to reduce their dependence on conventional products,” said Jasmina Aganovic, the General Manager of Consumer Products at AOBiome. “Examples include cutting out or cutting down on deodorant, cutting out or cutting down on moisturizers.”

The company isn’t promoting it as a shower replacement, but Whitlock says he uses “Mother Dirt” as an everyday substitute and hopes others will join him.

While it sounds crazy, it could have a major impact in areas stricken by droughts, such as California.

In June, California Gov. Jerry Brown said he was doing his part to conserve water by skipping showers.

Data shows that a low-flow shower head uses approximately one gallon of water every 48 seconds, so with an average shower lasting 10.25 minutes, Brown was saving 12.8 gallons of water every time he skipped one.

For Whitlock, that comes to more than 55,000 gallons of water saved.

But how does he smell?

He told Bloomberg Business that not only does his skin look great, he smells perfectly fine.
