This take the cake! This guy Trevor Johnston of Sydney, Australia is a CODA and has many deaf relatives. He also supports screening out deaf genetics so no more deaf babies will be born. This link In One's Own Image: Ethics and the Reproduction of Deafness -- Johnston 10 (4): 426 -- The Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education really makes my blood boiling. He said that one should be proactive in "social policies regarding disabilities to ensure that the society as whole will continue to value its deaf members despite the probable increased use of genetic screening and reproductive technology and in the decrease in the numbers of deaf people, especially those born deaf or who became deaf in early childhood." To me, the act of screening out the deaf genetics or deaf embryo is an act of devaluation. Period! I seriously doubt they will be proactive in social policies regarding deaf people. Do you think that the tv/movie people will continuing caption the shows for just few deaf people ??? No, I bet they will push the goverment to let them drop the caption altogther. Would they want deaf people in white collar jobs?? No, I'd bet they would push them to menial jobs or close to it. If there are so few of deaf people, would the hearing people learn sign language, no - they probably would freak out at the sight of a deaf person.

Suppose an elderly person became deaf and can't afford CI or HA, what this person is to do?? Maybe there is no HA because there are so few deaf people that the HA people abandon their HA shop. That is why I see a bigger deaf community will ensures that the deaf people are treated fairly. ASL needs to stay alive to help out the future late-deafened people/elderly people. There will always be deaf people and the HA/CI might not be always afforable. You know the insurance companies.

If his deaf parents are dead, they are spinning in their graves. If they are alive and knew of this, I won't be surprised if they disowned him.

Read his paper first (and his bio - biography) then email him if you like at: trevor.johnston@ling.mq.edu.au No flaming please.

I wonder if his interest in Marxism causes him to think this way. I don't really know how Marxism viewed disability.

This is unbelievable! We are moving backward. This very atttitude of superiority in the non-disabled will insure that social policy and attitudes will not be proactive nor progressive.

Agreed! The fewer deaf people, the more voiceless they are going to be. This Trevor said keep being proactive for the disabled, but I seriously doubt it. I don't know how a guy with degree(s) can come up with this, especially one with many deaf relatives.

Unbelievable that article sent chills down my spine, How insensitive he is! I have gotten to the point where I am tired of people who thinks deaf is a disability, because I don't even view deaf as a disability in my opinion. This deaf genetics screening out is a Nazi-style eugenics. What if the individuals lost their hearing later on, then what? shoot them??

Should these two related threads be merged so we don't have to duplicate posting?

Education does not insure empathy.

Only if they refuse to get CIs and live in an oral only environment! JK, don't kill me! But the two attitudes do seem to be related, despite the denial that they are connected.

and God help the person that if the CI doesnt benefit him/her!

I am not sure if the threads should be merged. I was pointing out that this CODA supports the screening out the deaf genetics eventhough he came from a deaf family with deaf genetics.

I guess I am leaving this up to the MODS.

Oralism and Eugenics? Yes, They do go hand in hand. It seems to the certain part of hearing community that the deaf people are burden on the hearing community but we know the truth. Because deaf people had to struggle with job discrimination and substandard public education, the truth is that a good part of hearing people are burden on the deaf people. I am mindful of the good hearing people like CODAs (except ones like Trevor Johnston) and other hearing people who know sign language and I appreciate those people.

Know what? I have a wicked, wicked thought. Let us screen out those too dumb to learn sign language and those who are against Deaf community. *heh!* *heh!* I mean we have 4 senses (well the most is 4 1/2 or maybe 4 3/4 senses) and some of us can speak while certain hearing people have full 5 senses but won't learn sign language. Should we equate signing with intelligence like some hearing people equate speech with intelligence? Yeah, I am being sarastic here.

That satisfies me. :) It was just a suggestion.

I just read this thread and I am just dumbfounded. There was a point when the doctors were concerned that my son was deaf and I kept telling them that it would not bother me at all. I actually started to get happy about it because I felt it would make him even more special to our family. It turned out that he wasn't deaf but still I would never CHOOSE to screen for it so I wouldn't have a deaf child. I would welcome a deaf child with OPEN ARMS!!!
