This undated photo provided by the Phoenix Police Department shows pieces of stolen luggage at the Phoenix home of Keith Wilson King and Stacy Lynne Legg-King. There were so many suitcases that Phoenix police could only give a rough estimate of their number Tuesday.

Keith Wilson King, 61, was one of two people arrested Nov. 2, and booked on counts of theft of property and possession of stolen property. Phoenix police found up to 1,000 pieces of luggage stolen from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in their home northwest of Phoenix.

PHOENIX - Two people suspected of stealing up to 1,000 pieces of luggage from baggage claim carousels at Phoenix's airport have been arrested by police who found heaps of the stolen bags strewn throughout their home.

There were so many suitcases that Phoenix police could only give a rough estimate of their number Tuesday as they pulled them out one by one and gathered them in the yard of Keith Wilson King and Stacy Lynne Legg-King's suburban residence.

"A piece of luggage here, a piece of luggage there, I would imagine gets stolen out of airports all the time," Phoenix police Detective James Holmes said Tuesday. "This is a livelihood. There's a lot of luggage and there's a lot of victims."

King, 61, and Legg-King, 38, were arrested Monday, and each was booked into jail on charges of theft of property and possession of stolen property. Legg-King also was arrested on suspicion of tampering with evidence. It was not immediately clear how the two are related.

Both denied requests to be interviewed, and it was unclear whether they had attorneys.

Holmes said investigators do not know how long the thefts have been happening, or whether more people were involved. All the luggage tags that would help identify the bags' owners were removed, he said.

Police first arrested King on a misdemeanor theft charge about three weeks ago when an officer saw him park at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, take a piece of luggage from one of the baggage claim carousels and get back into his car. He was released, and police began conducting surveillance on him.

Holmes said police followed King to the airport Monday and watched him take a piece of luggage that wasn't his and return to his home with it. They found the hundreds of other bags after searching the house Tuesday.

The home was in complete disarray, Holmes said, with the luggage, clothing and other items including garbage scattered about.

"The amount of luggage being stored inside of the residence was almost surreal," Officer Kendall Goo wrote in a court document.

Deborah Ostreicher, a spokeswoman for the Phoenix airport, said airlines stopped checking passengers' baggage claim tickets there sometime in the last 10 years as a cost-cutting measure.

She said airport officials and airlines are working together to assess security at the airport and are talking about checking passengers' bag tags again.

"We're evaluating a lot of different possibilities," she said.

Meanwhile, she said passengers should avoid putting critical medications or expensive items in checked luggage, clearly mark their bags, and pick them up as soon as possible after landing.

That's another reason why I don't trust the check-in baggage system. I pack light and use carry on. :)

oh boy. me too. several friends of mine lost their luggages and never saw them again. SHe borrowed a few clothes from mine and i never saw my old clothes and fake necklaces again. one time, we flied to florida and then came back to NY. I was freaking out when i thought my luggage was lost for good. But 2 hours later, someone else sent it to the wrong plane. i got the luggage back.

I've lost my suitcases once, when I flew from Istanbul, Turkey to Izmir, Turkey. They forgot to put my suitcases on the plane. I had to wait until the next following day to get them.

Now, they have a new policy for check-in-baggage system, You'll be charge for every suitcases or bags you had checked in. This is at Cleveland airport. I just found this out when I went to Reno, NV.

I've checked in my luggage twice during my flying career: once, it was lost. The other time, both the luggage and it's contents were severely damaged.

Needless to say, I'm a carry-on sort of person now. You can, if you pack well, fit a good week's work of clothing in a carry on- and if you're going longer than a week, you can just ship your clothes, even from the airport post office.

I'd rather have a few things definitely make it with me than have a lot of things maybe make it with me, for most trips.

Hubby's large suitcase was missing when he flew Air Ukraine from Germany to Ukraine. He got it back the next day. It was all wrapped up in layers of duct tape because it had been cut open. He threw it away in Ukraine.

Recently, I've been charged 15 bucks to check-in my suitcase, on both legs of the round trip! The hell I better see my luggage at the baggage claim area for that fee!

This is why you should always keep your valuable items in the carry-on baggage rather than the check-in baggage.

 Mine was $30.00, I had two suitcases. I didn't even know that they had decided to charge passengers fee for checking in bags at the airport until I got to there.

Aw man, more money for me to shell for my baggage!?!?!?!?!

Even when I went off for 2 months... I only kept maybe like two or three shirts and two pants... and a laptop as carry-on only.

There is such thing as "laundromats."

Eek, another reason why I'll never fly in an airplane. Thank you very much, I'm stickin' to my imaginary bird-like wings!

Whoa... that's a lot of luggage!

I've had my luggage lost a few times due to flight changes or delayed flights. I always got it at the end though. :)

when i went to London,England in 2002 with my mom but im totally embrassment for bag light!! i hates that..

Im plans flew to Kansas years ago for my homecoming of my old school and after that they im going back home to Arkansas but i hates that airport staff search my bags found scissor!! i would sued that Kansas City Airport and airport staff threw my beloved pink scissor how dare it!! And i got pissed off..

when i got flew home from my Aunt Bev's home on Jan.2007 and have no problems baggages and laptop everythings..They later my cousin Abby join with me visit Aunt Bev for while till my grandma Dusty's passed away due stroke..

Never had my luggage compromised or stolen, but I detest airport security looking inside my suitcase, grabbing a fistfull of my undErgarments and staring at it! Where on my panties does it say BOMB on them?

That's why I like Southwest airplane, never had problem. They charge none for have check-in baggage. Out of country? Yike, I had to be sure. yea yeaaaa

I never had any of my luggage stolen or lost whenever I check them in. But now I'm shocked that they're now making u pay for you to check in your luggage.... seriously that's so unfair.... we should get them for free after all we had to pay lots of money to fly on airplane. *sighs* Looks like I'm gonna have to find a suitcase small enough to carry it on.

What happen if you need take 1 week to visit NYC or Florida from CA so how does you can handle a large of clothes in carry-on?

Fly is cheaper than car for from SF to Atlanta due need gas and service.

I've flown to Texas and Michigan in the past and normally stay for a week, my medium sized baggage holds enough clothes to last me a week. The baggage fits in the above storage bin perfectly. As for travel liquids (shampoo, mouthwash, bodysoap) toothpaste, to put in TSA approved ziplock and goes in my backpack along with other few things. I have a large backpack that holds my macbook pro securely and has a lot room for other stuff to pack in. I don't want to pack too much, just enough to last my vacation time. If there is any event such as funeral, wedding, or whatnot, I have a fold up luggage that my casual clothes as well as street clothes that can go with it. If it is 2 weeks, I can always wash clothes there but I haven't flown away for 2 weeks in a long while.

As for the car trip, I have not drove cross country trip since 2005 and I miss the road adventure. I do know that flying is cheaper, but on the other hand, I like the adventure. ;)

My vacation times were to see my father, and my relatives there. :)
