Hello. I am a 16 year old hearing girl named Lena, but this is my 4th year taking ASL Courses. I am strongly interested in the deaf culture and I am planning on becoming an interpreter when I am older. I was born in Havana, Cuba, but most of my family is Bulgarian and Russian (hense the name "Lena"). I am an 11th grader in my highschool, I am going to graduate next year, and have been in dance (Ballet and Jazz) for 8 years.

So yes, that is me in a nutshell. Just made a quick thread to say hi.

hi, lena! my aunt is named after the lena, too. :) we're ukrainian, but who's counting on this side of the world?

Hello there

Welcome to Alldeaf and enjoy your stay here...btw I've been to Miami , they got a beautiful ocean!!! ;)

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf Lena! It's great to see someone who has genuine interests to become an interpreter and wishes you much success and great experiences as you embark on this journey! Hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD! ;)

Welcome to the forums here. I hope you don't mind my asking; What high school are you going and are you taking ASL classes there or elsewhere? At any rate, I wish you the very best in your career endeavors in becoming an ASL interpreter.

Perhaps our paths may cross in the future; I'm living in Miami as well and used to be an ASL instructor for a private high school.

Hi Lena, I used to run all over Florida .... You can check out this website which will get you started in the right direction for interpreting....

Well, the beaches are Ok. There is always better. I have been to Dominican Republic and the beaches in Miami do not even compare! They are filth compared to the Carrabean!!!

Eve:
You are Ukranian!! Wow, that's cool! I have 2 friends in school that are also from the Ukraine. They say it is a BEAUTIFUL country! I WILL visit when I am finished with school. I plan to visit for a month and go to Kiev. I am learning Russian, so that is sure to help somehow in partially understanding the language.

That is interesting. I didn't realize that Sunset has an ASL program. Is this an adult program, an after school thing? Who's your ASL teacher?

 :welcome: to Alldeaf Lena!!! I admire a young lady of your age to become so interested in deaf culture, and wanting to become an interpreter. It's wonderful to see your goals are set and will soon be met when you graduate high school and move on to higher education. I wish you the best of luck!! Have fun posting, and making many wonderful new friends!! Welcome aboard Lena!! :applause:

i've never been to ukraine, myself. i plan to go there, too, but probably for a lot longer than a visit. i'm also very much interested in RSL and UKL.

Yes, Sunset has a day school program and I believe an adult school program too (I am not sure about the adult part though). My sign teacher is Linda Fleming. Killian and Braddock has an ASL program too, but Braddock is not....lets say "top notch". Their students learn about 600 signs a year while the Sunset students learn 3,000 a year. Coming from Braddock students that come to Sunset, Braddock's Sign teacher isn't really good at the job and half the time he doesn't even teach. Personally, I think it's sad because so many of the students there that take Sign are missing out on what they could know and what a beautiful language they can take advantage of and use it to help others, and to learn the deaf culture. Well, I guess it is always better to know a little something about anything than to know nothing at all.

G'day Lena,
Welcome to AD. Hope you'll enjoy yourself here. Good luck with learning languages.
Cheers!
