The History of Toilet Paper.

I was wonder what people used for TP before there was TP .
Corncobs sound very awful.

I never knew people used corncobs, that is new to me. I did know people used leaves and newspaper .

Corn Cobs, Sears & Roebuck's Catalogs...Sticks...even their hands...some didn't even wipe at all (rural country people)....Most didn't take baths in the winter times....and even during the summer, it was usually at the creek. :giggle:...I do remember my grammy making me stand in a big washtub in the middle of the floor while she bathed me....No indoor plumbing or faucets, or even refrigerators....had to boil hot water outside in a big pot under a fire... and a wood stove for cooking.

Now-a-days...people don't realize how easy they have it....Didn't get an indoor toilet until I was around 7 or so....thought we had to be "rich"!...I do know now...that me and my siblings were a "dirty bunch"....:laugh2:

I was told by people serving in the British army in the Middle East that they had to make do with one square per 'visit'... with that square to clean their finger.

You guys remember that scene in Dances With Wolves where the diary crucial to proving his innocence is used as paper by two illiterate soldiers?

My dad once told a new guy he hired to only use one square of TP and to fold it in half . Dad was joking but it vey hard to tell he was so I wonder if the new guy listen to dad.

I do remember going to visit 2 friends of mine (a couple)...he worked in a warehouse of some sort....I went to the bathroom...and the toilet paper in there was the Industrial type, very big role and so rough!!...I asked my friend what kind of toilet paper they used....she said her hubby got all their toilet paper from where he worked...so it was "free"....I told her to let him use it and get her some Charmin'....better yet, some Moist Wipes...

Reminds me of a joke I overheard my father (Marine Corps Vet) tell. Basically they were issued a single sheet, it was folded in half and a circle was torn off the middle. Then the finger was inserted through the sheet hole, "thrust in", sheet around finger was used to wipe off finger, and small torn piece was used to clean off fingernail! I know... :ugh:

I don't know how it is now but use to be back during Desert Storm an MRE came with TP in it folded up in brown paper ... 3 or 4 squares I think it was. Here's a pic...

it's so stiff and it crumbles easily

They did this archealogical dig and found petrified human shit with some pointy stones nearby that also had petrified shit on it. Yep, they used the sharp stones to scrap the shit off their buttholes.

I visit a friend that lived in Oklahoma in a Black township. My friend was in born his house and dies there too. When I was visiting my friend and his wife I was told not to put and TP in the toilet , there was no sewage system there. The water was so bad you could not brush your teeth with it and when took a shower you had to keep your mouth close the whole time.
I had a nice seeing my friends but I was sure glad to get back home where the water was better and you could put TP in a toilet. The town was started by free Black slaves stayed a Black township .

I guess they could cut any hemorrhoids they had with the sharp stones too.

Well....back in the ancient roman times there were communal toilets... and communal sponges on long sticks. After sponging, the sticks were dutifully shoved back in the little holes filled with salt water in front of the bigger holes used for... well you get the picture.
