Kootchie found a cool list in his things and let me read it:

The 10 Commandments of Deaf Culture
-------------------------------------
1. You shall not put hearing culture above Deaf Culture;
2. You shall not lose eye contact when communicating with a Deaf person;
3. You shall communicate in sign language at all times;
4. You shall not be the Deaf person's sign language instructor;
5. You shall not be the Deaf person's English grammar teacher;
6. You shall not be the Deaf person's speech therapist;
7. You shall not be the Deaf person's comedian, tell non-Deaf jokes and puns;
8. You shall not be the Deaf person's "mother or father";
9. You shall view Deaf people as an ethnic group, not as handicapped;
10. You shall believe Deaf people can do all things but hear.

I know some of you do not agree with this 100%, but I WOULD use it to make a poster for my ASL class so that the students will understand more clearly!!

If my statement is perceived as belittling, then that's your perception. Anything that states "thou shalt" is for the herd, so i deconstructed it into its own refutation.

Plus, I thought the above 10 commandments were far too reactionary and too fixated on the hearing world. There's too much of the spirit of resentment in those 10. Where's the sense of deaf pride?

I don't see any sense of Deaf pride in your recent postings. Ohhh, wait. You spelled "deaf pride" in lowercase. Makes sense. You don't have any!

As for myself, I think it is funny and thought to be cool to share with other peeps on AD2. Why do you have to be such a downer all the damn time??

from MY perspective HER, just letting u know I See this as a NON POLTICIAL comment that was posted tonight, Deaf258 was merely sharing this wasn't INTENDED for u to put him down, or justify that with deaf politics! I thought it was kewl, and What he does is Deaf258's business theres no need for u to give us an attidute abt simple comments like that. * bowing out of this whats now begining a heated debate*

Woo..I ain't gonna comment on anything -- only that we all do have the right to share things, but please don't try to pull down anyone by snide comments, etc. This forum is supposed to be a fun place to share and ask/answer questions and so forth. Nope. I have plenty of pride but unlike you i'm not going to define myself by the negative actions of hearing people.
