COMPTON, Calif. (Sept. 14) - An older sister of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams was shot to death early Sunday, authorities said.

Yetunde Price, 31, was shot shortly after midnight in the Los Angeles suburb following a ''confrontation'' with some residents, Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Scott Butler said.

No arrests were immediately made.

Price was with a man in a sports utility vehicle when the two became involved in a confrontation, Deputy Richard Pena said. He did not have details of the confrontation.

Price was shot in the upper torso. Deputies on patrol heard gunshots and went to the scene, where they found Price.

Price, of Corona, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The man who was with Price would be interviewed, Pena said.

At about 6 a.m., about 40 deputies surrounded a home where they believed three people involved in the shooting were barricaded, Pena said. However, when police entered the house six hours later, it was empty.

Price was one of five Williams sisters who spent their early years in Compton, a crime- and poverty-ridden community.

The family later moved to Florida. Their father and mother, Richard and Oracene, are divorced, and Price used her mother's maiden name.

She worked as a personal assistant to her sisters. She was identified as a registered nurse and a business management major in the 2003 media guide for the WTA Tour.

Carlos Fleming, who represents Venus and Serena Williams, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

WTA Tour spokesman Darrell Fry said he had no immediate comment.

Man arrested over Williams sister murder

AFP - The family of tennis superstars Serena and Venus Williams united in grief as police arrested a man on suspicion of murdering their eldest sister, Yetunde Price.

Aaron Michael Hammer, 24, was being held without bail after his arrest late Sunday, Deputy Bill Spear of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told AFP.

But Dave Nelson, Hammer's uncle, said on local television that Hammer was innocent.

"My nephew didn't do it," he said. "Please don't let an innocent person go to jail for this.

"I think he's being set up," he said, adding that a "drunk kid" was responsible.

Price, 31, was shot early Sunday in the gang-ridden Compton suburb of Los Angeles, where the tennis stars got their start on public courts.

Police also arrested the man who was with Price in a white sports utility vehicle at the time, 28-year-old Rolland Wormley, for violating parole.

"Whatever his involvement was in this incident was enough to violate the terms and conditions of his parole," Spear said.

Price and the man later identified as Wormley became "involved in a confrontation with some local residents," Deputy Scott Butler said. "The confrontation led to gunfire."

Authorities said Price was shot in the upper body and died later in hospital.

"I was real surprised that something like that would happen to her," Randy Brown, who had bought a house from Price, told local television station CBS2. "I don't know why somebody would want to do something like that. She was a real nice lady, just a business type of person, just always on the go, working."

After the shooting, deputies searched the immediate area, including a house, but it was unclear what led them to Hammer.

Venus, 23, and 21-year-old Serena Williams are the youngest of five daughters raised by Richard Williams and Oracene Price, who are now divorced.

The three older daughters, Yetunde, Isha and Lyndrea, were the daughters of Oracene Price and a former husband, Yusef A.K. Rasheed, but all five sisters were close.

"We are extremely shocked, saddened and devastated by the shooting death of our beloved Yetunde," the family said in a prepared statement. "Yetunde was a loving mother, daughter, sister and friend."

Oracene Price and Venus and Serena Williams were among the family members making their way to Los Angeles in the wake of the shooting. Yetunde Price lived in Corona, California.

The community group Stop the Violence planned a candlelight vigil at the scene this evening.

Yetunde Price was herself a divorced mother of three children - five-year-old Jair, nine-year-old Justus and 11-year-old Jeffrey.

A registered nurse who cared for private patients in their homes, Price also acted as personal assistant for her famous younger sisters and was often seen courtside supporting them at tournaments.

Oracene Price and her daughters appeared on the Oprah Winfrey talk show last year and talked about their close-knit relationship. Yetunde Price was featured in a People magazine piece this month discussing her relationship with her two youngest sisters.

In addition to her nursing, Yetunde Price had recently opened a beauty salon with a high school friend.

"What's going to happen to the kids? That's all I can think of," Gladys Avila, whose daughter owned the Headed Your Way salon with Price, told the Los Angeles Times.

When his daughters were rising to prominence in the tennis world, Richard Williams recounted that he purposely chose the game for them as a way to a more prosperous life.

After the sisters began dominating junior tennis in Southern California, he moved them to Florida to pursue the sport.

Serena is currently ranked third in the world while Venus is the world number six.

Venus Williams won four Grand Slam titles in 2000 and 2001 and an Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Serena Williams has won five of the last seven Grand Slams --and gave up the world number one ranking this year only after knee surgery brought her season to a temporary halt.

Both sisters missed the recently completed US Open. Serena was recovering from her surgery and Venus was nursing a torn abdominal muscle.
