My mothers is bedridden in a nursing home and near deaf. I would like to get her a TV / DVD combo player. Is Closed Captions specific to the media or to the device or to both?

DVD players itself does not have closed caption. You have to turn on subtitle through DVD movie menu. Check the DVD movie case (usually on the bottom in the back) for "Subtitles: SDH or English". SDH stands for Subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing. New DVD players have Netflix. They have many movies and TV shows. only $7.99 a month. Netflix is required to caption every movie and TV show.

All new tv/dvd combo players sold today are caption ready. Sometimes the dvd has to have the captions turned on. Follow Silver Roxy's advise.

You do have to find the area in the menu of the tv to turn on the captions.

I would also suggest putting your mother name on the DVD player , things to get stolen in nursing home by patients and the staff. I wanted to get my mom a DVD player to watch movies b/c she was bedridden in a nursing home but I was worried it would get stolen and mom would not tell me.
