Teen decapitated at theme park, police say
Teen struck, killed by coaster at theme park, police say - CNN.com

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A teenager Saturday was struck and killed by a roller coaster at the Six Flags Over Georgia theme park outside Atlanta, authorities said

The 17-year-old park visitor was killed after scaling two fences -- one of which was six feet tall -- around the Batman roller coaster, park spokeswoman Hela Sheth said in a statement.

The teen, who visiting the park with a church group from Springfield, South Carolina, was decapitated, she said.

It was unclear how fast the outside-looping coaster was moving when it struck the teen, but according to the park's Web site, the ride reaches speeds of 50 mph.

"We do not know why this person was intent on gaining access to this restricted area," the statement said, noting that multiple signs are posted stating, "Danger Zone," "Do Not Enter" and "Authorized Personnel Only."

"Some witnesses have stated that the individual was trying to retrieve something he had lost," Sheth said. "Others reported that he was trying to touch the ride. This is merely speculation at this point, and we are working with park visitors and local police to learn more."

No one on the ride was injured, she said.

Police said the incident occurred about 2 p.m. The ride was closed Saturday, but park officials said they expected it to reopen Monday.

The victim's family was at the park with him, Sheth said, and park representatives were with them Saturday evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," she said.

Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce said officers would continue to investigate the incident, but "all indications are that the park had done everything they could to maintain a safe environment."

In May 2002, a worker was killed after he walked under the Batman roller coaster's track and was struck in the head by a passenger's leg, according to The Associated Press. After the incident, the ride was inspected and deemed safe by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, AP reported.

In June, a girl's feet were cut off when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the Superman Tower of Power, a police dispatcher said.

OMG what a sad story,I just saw this on the news.

Jeez... what was the boy thinking?

That's like running into a gunfight cuz you dropped your hat.

Yikes ! I never like to ride in a coaster, no matter how they look if, they are havin' fun.

I prefer to join little children's rides instead of adults' wild rides.... just to be on a safe side. :)

Actually, it didn't happen on the ride. The boy was leaning over a fence to get his hat... but the roller coaster hit him in the head killing him instantly.

It's a pity that this happened. That's why they put up warning signs on fences. It's not to scare you, it's because it is really a danger to climb over the fences.

I had been rode that same before at few time when visit six flags in Atlanta.

I feel bad for this boy, he should know better about read warning sign.

Thanks, Banjo... but, still there's always " danger " out there - it doesn't matter, if it is something that someone needs to bend over or what have they that could kill that person witout a warnin' in despite of what a sign tellin' people not to come across or near it. It's either on the rides or not and yet, there's still danger out there. Like for instance: If, I am on the wild rides, all of sudden a mother nature starts to get crazy like an earthquake or whatever ... I could be killed from that as well during on the ride. It could be anything unexpectly.

Sorry, if I am too paranoid. I just don't trust myself gettin' hurt or killed.

what a sad story! I would never climb over a fence that i am not spose to unless i KNOW there is no danger and i can clearly see what is on the other side of it i.e. grass!

I feel so sorry for those who were riding on the roller coaster when it happened. For sure, they will have to deal with trauma afterwards.

It is really awful!

I wonder if the head flew away like in the movie.... I know - a morbid curiosity but admit it - you're curious too

haha yeah. "heads will roll!"

they should really bring back the guilotine as far as capital punsihment is concerned. Just ny 2 cents.

This may seem mean and cruel, but read it in its entirety and you'll know why I said what I did.

I do not send out my prayers and thoughts to the family. Obviously, the boy couldn't read and thought that the signs around this ride didn't pertain to him. Do these parks have to place barbed wire on top of the signs in order for the seriousness of injuries or even death to be taken seriously?

If there is a lawsuit, I hope the family loses and doesn't get a dime.

Maybe he couldn't read English?
