Technology Versus Simple life?

I was posting in another thread about tv shows and this came to mind --

Ever since the new age of technology and computer usage with Internet, etc. How much has it changed your life and don't any of you sometimes wish that things were much simpler like before technology entered our lives?
Reason I mention this is because I notice a lot of people spend quite a bit of time online and not really interacting that much with their families/friends IN PERSON. You know what I mean? Mainly, we find ourselves sitting in front the computer and chatting with people online -- not really socialising with friends in the flesh.

What do you think about this? Was just pondering over this subject and knew I had to put it up in here.

Cheers

Oh yeah, it does make a big impact on me. :ugh: Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. I'm always on the computer and ignoring my husband. :o That's bad. :P I need to lay back from the computer once in a while to spend more time with my own family. :o Yep, yep, yep, I admit! :P

That's why I usually have the evenings/weekends away from the computer, so that way I can spend time with my family and friends in person. :thumb:

its changed life dramatically i agree Waterrats -- i myself LIKE the technology thats available to us today -- it DOES make life easier than the old time and less time consuming when trying to look up something -- the www is just a click away and the answer u are looking for is right there as opposed to the old method of the use of dewey decimal system or other methods of search  THAT was VERY time consuming to find the right books/reference to answer the questions u are looking for :o i guess its good to at least KNOW abt that system

:werd: Internet does help me find what I need to find out immediately. For an example, ordering a specific product is much easier than get into a car, drive far to get to the store, get out of a car, etc... ya know. :P

Also, I love technology now because it helps me to do my research easier, like finding more rules/laws about how to protect my children (carseats, cribs, etc.)... and all that. :thumb:

The negative part of having technology in my life is that I don't socialize enough with my family. :ugh:

In some way I like Technology and in some way I like simple life...:o

Yeah...you've got a point there. Yes, it's much easier on finding things we need information on and the sorts, rather than thumbing it through a book or something which takes a lot of time. It is great tool for students as they can do research half the time we used in our time in school before computer and internet were ever popular. You know?

Same here...I like both -- but sometimes I sit back and realise that I spend a lot of time on the computer rather than spending quality time with family and doing simple past times outside the house.

The internet keeps me inside so I don't get out much less interaction.

Then get off yer arse and get to interacting in the real world! ;) Shoo...shoo...go outside and get the fresh air you need and interact with people in REAL LIFE!

Technology makes a lot of things easier. However, some things go a bit too far and it takes the fun out of having a simple life.

Exactly...for example, now people are trying to get tv and dvd players installed into cars!! Please! We don't need any extra distractions in the car whilst driving!

Yeah, I have to admit to being one of those people who are online a lot. I must say, I kind of miss living the life I lived before technology and stuff changed my life. However, being on the net does have its benefits such as research in half the time and it's easier to do it on the net.

Oh and I've met some good friends through the net, including you WaterRats :) and my boyfriend as well. I've also talked to old friends I lost touch with!!! So it's pretty good for keeping in touch.

However, it does get addictive... and that's a negative aspect because it means I lose interaction with other friends who don't use the net. So I try to take a break from it every now and then. :) Now I look back on my younger years (no I'm not that old LOL) I think ignorance was bliss... (speaking about the net) hehe. I think we should all try and remember to keep a balance of technology and simple life. That way, it'll keep the disadvantages to a minimum!! :)

;) WTG, Ziggy..! We have to balance our needs between technology and the simple ways of life -- we do have our needs that needs to be fulfilled by the simple ways of life not the technological side of it. :)

I also wanted to add that I have started reading books again so I disappear into the world of the book I'm reading for a couple of hours at least. I think this is very good, and I'm glad I've started doing this again.

While reading on the net is fun, it's nowhere near the same as reading a good book OFF-LINE! Hehe :) Just thought I'd add my observation.

 to Ziggy!! ;) We gotta set up a bookworm club to entice people to read again in the 'olden' ways! ;)
I have downloaded ebooks but it's nowhere as good as holding a paperback or hardcover book in BED -- whilst an ebook, have to sit at the computer, blah!

I like the internet is as newsletter all over the website. I normal get online all day if I end up get hurt. Later on night, I cook somethin and enjoy the tv show. Thats pretty much it. I don't like the internet pretty much be cause some the website made no sence. Today, I think that all computer or tech. are junk.

I thought I might mention that since I've taken up reading again, I've found it's had a great improvement on my life, as I'm finding it easier to relax by reading a book. I like the idea of having some offline time every now and then (maybe more than that too! hehe) to myself so I can watch DVDs, go driving and do things I wouldn't normally do.

I think I would much rather live a simple life without the extra technology (apart from having a mobile only for emergencies as it is needed for a deaf person plus TTYs). "Simple people enjoy simple things." This quote is not always true as EVERYONE would enjoy the simple life (if they can really appreciate it that is).

well suprise suprise im reviving an old thread and i SO agree lately this past month and within the grace of god IM finally outta of my internet world i have a puppy to watch yard to clean, do alot of landscaping, walk my puppy, read a book ( got an old classic im putting it off haha) getting ideas for my new ohana that's being built very soon. socializing with family, however missing friends thousands of miles away is hard, thank goodness there's e mails and i e mailed a close friend of mine and do that at least once a week to tell her how im doing so she'll be updated abt me :)

and last but not the least that's why there's away messages so i dont have to sit at the puter and poeple can e mail me or IM me and leave a message and i don't have to worry abt missing anything... and being subscribed to AD's newsletter and postings it sure does help me alot so i won't miss out on anything can always catch up and read things at a later time too.... :)
and the song goes

a simple life for a man wife and family
a simple life for u and me.....

I must admit that I am hook to this computer since it arrived my home 6 months ago, and still learning every day how to use this internet! :type:

I stop watching TV at nights as I rather to be online chatting with my friends here and overseas! Before this I seldom contact them by snail letters, and now I keep sending them junk emails

I tried to keep away from computer so I can spent my quality time with my family and watch sunday movies with CC.

I miss my creative crafts - its on hold at the moment!

I second you, RR, I do find myself sitting in front of the computer screen rather than sitting at the loungeroom with hubby and kids...so I stop and sit in the loungeroom...problem is -- both hubby and step son are just as bad as I am with sitting AT the computer for hours at end!

I have to get myself back into getting a scarf I started knitting months back, STARTED again,.
