Teacher of the Deaf needs help!!!

I am a teacher of the deaf who is hearing. I teach a preschool for deaf/hard of hearing students. I have one particular student who is 3 years old and has deaf parents. He does not sign spontaneously for me, however he will sign if I demonstrate a sign first. His parents say he is signing more and vocalizing more at home. I want to see him sign more spontaneously! Does anyone have any suggestions??? thanks!
 
Hi. Do you know if he has older brothers and/or sisters at home? My youngest son (hearing) didn't talk much before he was around 3 to 3 1/2; actually he still doesn't talk much. I always felt that it was because he had a sister and brother who were several years older, plus his dad and I. There was always someone to get him what he wanted; all he had to do was point it out. Even if he has no siblings, delaying in giving him what he wants might motivate him to ask for it. Set a favorite toy or something really interesting just out of his reach, and "play dumb" if he just points to it.

Good luck. I'm majoring in Deaf Ed right now. One more year and I'll be having to figure these things out for real.

Let that child communicate freely ...mime,sign, or by writing, etc. I am deaf as a child and now people say I am hard of hearing. Over the years, I learned to speak English and little bit of spanish. I signed when someone use asl to communicate with me. I speak English when someone talk to me in Enlish language. also, Spanish, etc. We should not restrict the child to one method of communication and one language.

I don't think the point is to force the child to use only one mode of communication. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the student and parents are deaf, yet the child is speaking more than signing?

As for what to do... I'd just make sure you're always signing when addressing the child. Perhaps he/she will catch on.
