Thanks dereksbicycles. I've been hearing about different types of places where you can learn and am curious about the differences. The class I'm taking is just a continuing education type thing, no credit, but it's pretty intense: even though it's ASL 1, there's no talking at all, we just have to pay really close attention for 2 hours. It's an extreme mental exercise for alot of us. She signs, she pantomimes if we don't know the sign, she fingerspells if she has to, writing on the board seems to be a last resort. I'm loving it, but wondering what the intensive courses are like, or the credit courses in colleges, etc. I might go back and take some of them after I get through this series (they have 1, 2 and 3) just to see, and to hopefully meet more people to practice with.

Our class is only 8 weeks, and I heard the last week is a party, so really 7 I guess. I hate to lose two hours of instruction, but the other thing I heard is that during the party, kids from the school (a residential deaf school) where we have class will join us and we'll have a chance to talk to them, which is pretty awesome.

Anyway, I'm hoping with you that your girlfriend's signing gets alot of help from the class. I'm thinking the chances of that are good: she has the advantage of having someone to sign with, use what she's learning. I mean, that's how you retain what you learn, so you can keep building on it, I think. Instead of the lessons feeling more like rote academic stuff, which most people seem to forget pretty quickly.

Are you going to take anything?
