My girlfriend and I were both at Deaf Social night at mall on Tuesday night. We talked to one guy who was deaf just like me and had a hearing girlfriend. We were talking about my girlfriend taking ASL class. I asked him if his girlfriend was going to take ASL class. He said no, he will teach her himself.

Yes, ASL class costs $$$. I'm very proud of my girlfriend for wanting to take ASL class. Yeah, it would be nice to have money saved for rent or bills, but I'm proud that she wants to "invest" in our relationship.

To each of their own. I realize that there are many reasons why a person refuses to take ASL class other than financial reasons. I'm sure you can think of a lot of reasons.

My girlfriend is nervous and excited about her ASL class. It'll be a high intense program and I hope her ASL gets better.

I am taking ASL 3. I am learning more Spanish from my new guy :)

I'd like to hear more about the intensive program she's going into. (And awesome that she's doing it, btw.)

It will be 2 hours per week for 12 week. It'll be one night per week. 24 hours is a lot of time to learn ASL. I hope it gets a lot better.

Thanks dereksbicycles. I've been hearing about different types of places where you can learn and am curious about the differences. The class I'm taking is just a continuing education type thing, no credit, but it's pretty intense: even though it's ASL 1, there's no talking at all, we just have to pay really close attention for 2 hours. It's an extreme mental exercise for alot of us. She signs, she pantomimes if we don't know the sign, she fingerspells if she has to, writing on the board seems to be a last resort. I'm loving it, but wondering what the intensive courses are like, or the credit courses in colleges, etc. I might go back and take some of them after I get through this series (they have 1, 2 and 3) just to see, and to hopefully meet more people to practice with.

Our class is only 8 weeks, and I heard the last week is a party, so really 7 I guess. I hate to lose two hours of instruction, but the other thing I heard is that during the party, kids from the school (a residential deaf school) where we have class will join us and we'll have a chance to talk to them, which is pretty awesome.

Anyway, I'm hoping with you that your girlfriend's signing gets alot of help from the class. I'm thinking the chances of that are good: she has the advantage of having someone to sign with, use what she's learning. I mean, that's how you retain what you learn, so you can keep building on it, I think. Instead of the lessons feeling more like rote academic stuff, which most people seem to forget pretty quickly.

Are you going to take anything?

Her class starts on Feb. 16. I should be taking something. I may take basic auto or bike repairs. I can let any interested parties know how her class goes. It'll be at a local deaf community. It'll not be for credit. No pressure. I think people learn ASL fairly well if they've no quizzes to worry about and just be themselves. I'm looking forward to her class and see how it works out for her.
