Sudan women 'lashed for trousers'

Several Sudanese women have been flogged as a punishment for dressing "indecently", according to a local journalist who was arrested with them.

Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, who says she is facing 40 lashes, said she and 12 other women wearing trousers were arrested in a restaurant in the capital, Khartoum.

She told the BBC several of the women had pleaded guilty to the charges and had 10 lashes immediately.

Khartoum, unlike South Sudan, is governed by Sharia law.

Several of those punished were from the mainly Christian and animist south, Ms Hussein said.

Non-Muslims are not supposed to be subject to Islamic law, even in Khartoum and other parts of the mainly Muslim north.

She said that a group of about 20 or 30 police officers entered the popular Khartoum restaurant and arrested all the women wearing trousers.

"I was wearing trousers and a blouse and the 10 girls who were lashed were wearing like me, there was no difference," she told the BBC's Arabic service.

Ms Hussein said some women pleaded guilty to "get it over with" but others, including herself, chose to speak to their lawyers and are awaiting their fates.

Under Sharia law in Khartoum, the normal punishment for "indecent" dressing is 40 lashes.

Ms Hussein is a well-known reporter who writes a weekly column called Men Talk for Sudanese papers. She also works for the United Nations Mission in Sudan.

*shake my head sadly*

Even more disturbing, my local newspaper website listed this story under "not the news." Apparently, beating women does not qualify as "real news."

Gee...

This is appalling but yet it is disturbing to know that they don't even consider women to be equal.

I just wish there was some way that these women's oppression could end in the Mid-East.

Well, I may get banned for a few days for making this comment, but here it goes.

Why should a woman wear a burka over there? To begin with, the weather is so hot and am sure it's quite arid that it's next to impossible to move or do anything wearing that stupid thing. Pants are more comfortable and allow some movement for the legs. If those men want to wear burkas, please feel free to do so, as we notice, here in the West, that all you men hang around each other and I personally have never, ever seen a picture of a Sudanese man with a woman on his arm or holding hands. Yet, the men look like they're each other's "butt buddies."

Furthermore, some Christian denominations require women over here to only wear dresses. Some don't allow makeup or jewelry. Excuse me, but have you ever sat down on a cold vinyl seat or plastic seat in a bus when the weather is freezing cold or been outside in the snow and ice in a dress? If not, then you should get yourself a pair of polyester pants and wear them without underwear (the short ones, boxers if you will) and sit down on a cold seat or be outside when it's below zero degrees farenheit.

As for makeup, most women want to look attractive and I see nothing wrong with it or wearing jewelry. Some women don't wear makeup and they should because they scare single guys like me into remaining single.

By the way, it's becoming chic for men to wear makeup, too! ;)

Those women needs a lot of supportive... and love. :(

Sudan need be divide into North Sudan and South Sudan, North Sudan is mostly muslim and it has sharia law and South Sudan is mostly Christians or other religion, including Jewish and it has little religion law, such as ban on homosexual.

How about take paper and say "I'm not muslim" then put on back and they can't punish you if you are not muslim.

It's better to stay out of North Sudan.

I understand it's all about their religious culture, but I've never thought it made it right how women there must wear certain things or cannot. This is what I love about America - freedom to choose what I want to wear. I feel for those women who are getting lashed - that must be painful!

crap like this kind of religious culture turns me off to all religions.

Youd think the Sudan men would think the police have better things to do than hassle women wearing pants. What a bunch on inbreed morons they got over there.

We need to remember, Doug, that religions are made by men and women trying to impose THEIR agenda on others. For me, I prefer the Relationship . . . :) Huge, indescribable difference! Reba knows what I'm referring to.

Beating the women for some small infraction keeps them afraid and powerless. It's an effective strategy to keep the women oppressed. It's like an abusive husband that controls his wife in the U.S., but on a larger, institutional scale.

Yes, I do.

That's just terrible... I feel sorry for these women. It also makes me grateful that I live in America where women can be themselves.

That's terrible. But it's got nothing to do with real religion.

I remember reading a story about this afganistan woman who wouldn't wear a burqa. She carried a copy of the Koran with her and asked these 'religious' police to find the information where it said she should be wearing a Burqa. One very brave woman that.

This women will be alot better if they are in South Sudan, such as Juba.

South Sudan will declare the independence from Sudan to become own country in 2011.

It has everything to do with religion when they use religion to justify violent sociopathic behavior. Every religion is guilty of it. Fuck religion and their imaginary god

Using religion to justify violent sociopathic behavior is wrong.

Not every religion does that. "Religion" includes many different beliefs.

I think he's refer as sharia law, strict religious law for Muslims.
