The Speech Research Laboratory at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is conducting a research study to evaluate how hearing impaired listeners perceive synthetic speech. We would like to find out if this type of computer-generated speech can be used effectively in software designed for aural rehabilitation. Study participants will listen to samples of synthetic speech and type what they hear on a computer. The listening session takes about one hour. Participants will be paid $25.

In order to participate in the study, you must be 18 or older and have bilateral cochlear implants or a unilateral implant with non-functional hearing in the contralateral ear. You must also be a native speaker of American English. Unilaterally implanted participants will be screened for hearing in their non-implanted ear.

The study will be conducted in the Speech Research Laboratory at the Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children. When you arrive, you will be asked to sign a consent form that explains the research procedures and your rights as a study participant. A researcher will answer any questions you may have. If you decide to be in the study, you will sign a release form authorizing the researchers at Nemours to request your hearing history and audiometric information from your doctor.

If you think you qualify and are interested in participating in the study, please contact Mark Paullin at:
