Driver Unaware Students On His Vehicle
POSTED: 3:50 p.m. EDT May 16, 2003
UPDATED: 4:13 p.m. EDT May 16, 2003
HERSHEY, Pa. -- A 20-year-old college student who got a 7-mile ride on the platform of a tractor-trailer without the driver's knowledge was killed Thursday morning when he jumped off the rig and was run over, police said.
The accident happened around 2 a.m., as the tractor-trailer was coming to a stop in Hershey along Route 422.
The Chantilly, Va., man, who attended Lebanon Valley College in Annville, became entangled in the trailer's right rear tires and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police were not releasing the victim's name pending notification of his family.
The truck's driver, James Rutledge, 45, of Jermyn, was unaware that the victim and another student, Jonah Modesto, jumped onto a platform behind the cab of the truck when it was stopped at an intersection in Annville, police said.
Modesto, 21, of Pottsville, jumped off the truck in Hershey to tell Rutledge about the accident, police said. He was not injured.
Police are still investigating the accident, and no charges have been filed. They say they do not know why the two students jumped onto the truck.
"There was no reason to be riding on the back of that tractor-trailer," Derry Township Police Sgt. Terry Ferree told WGAL-TV.
