Just a quick Hi for now, as I'm researching for a presentation.

BTW, I'm looking for info on intervention services for Amish Deaf children/families. Can anyone point me towards resources?

Thanks,

I don't know anything about that...

But I would guess that hearing aids would probably not be allowed since that is considered "technology" and technology isn't permitted in Amish culture. Of course, it would also depend on the group since there are some Amish settlements that allow some technology of some sorts. :dunno:

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. I have seen some Amish people who I assumed that they were all hearing. I have never met a d/Deaf/HOH Amish person or people. I never thought of that before. That is good to bring up another different culture which they are from Germany. As for Vampyrox was saying is that most of the Amish people are very stubborn and still want to continue using the old ways without new technology. They are very religious. Some of the Amish people have gone across the other side to live among the people who use technology, but they are not to return back to the people again unless they have soft heart for them to return. As for the resources, all you can do is provide sign language (ASL) and maybe some signs books for both family members and the deaf person/s so that they can learn to communicate with signs. I don't know how you can approach and response to knowing if there is deaf and hard of hearing children and adults in the Amish community. The only solution is to go over there and talk to the Amish people about special needs for deaf or hard of hearing people in their community. They might give you some information for that. Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. Just relax and have fun. See you around. :)
