I have never filed for SSI before but I am in a position to where anything will help. I have never received SSI prior, and from what I understand you have to reapply numerous times before you are accepted.

Can someone tell me what exactly SSI is, and other than a small benefits paycheck, how does it help?

I think I can qualify but I am not sure. I am a single mom, hoh, and have very low income. I do work a fulltime job and I receive no child-support payments. right now a little extra financial boost would help me get back on my feet.

I have also thought about taking on a second fulltime job to get bills paid down ASAP. How will this affect my SSI?? I dont plan on being on SSI on a permanent basis, temporarily until I can get back on my feet and able to hold my own without any government assistance.

I think u would qualify for SSDI...

I dont know wht the difference is but it helps with finances..LOL!

First step, get an audiogram done from your audi and bring it with u to the SSA office

2nd step, find the nearest SSA office

3rd step, walk in or call for an appt

and go from there...they will guide u thru the paperwork.

That's what I did after my ex left me while in my first semester of grad school. I was all alone and all panicky so some of my deaf friends told me to go appy so I did and it saved my ass in which I was able to finish school and get a better job.

Good luck!

I would highly encourage you to STAY AWAY from SSI, they are pain in rear. Find good job; of course you need to start the bottom. Then you work up at least 10 years, then you'd be qualified for SSDI which is much better and more flexible than SSI.

I personally can't image how I can live off with under 600 dollars a month SSI checks. I get much more than that, and I love my job to death. Ain't going back to them ever again.

Hi, you simply have to go through your phone book government page, and you call the closest SS office in your area. You make an appointment and request and interpreter if you need one. They will likely mail you a form of what you need to bring as proof of your income and whatever they need from you. It's important to be at the appointment on time because many people apply and are waiting to be called for their turns.

I am not sure what you mean that you have to re-apply. I have never had to re-apply except I have had to have an interview face to face to make sure I was still eligible.

Your income is counted towards your SSI, and it will affect how much you will receive. I don't get any right now because I live at home with my parent, and I work full-time. I get way more than what SSI can give me about 500 something is the most they can pay.

You can ask them if you can qualify for anything else that you have not thought about.

In you situation, it might be different, but it never hurts at all to apply. You will just know whether or not you will get anything. The pain with them is that you have to provide them with copies of your paycheck every single month to get your SSI. You use it for whatever you need it for.

Try apply ssdi first then if you do receive ssdi then must earn limit under $600.00 from part time a job> I think so :dunno: :):):)

Curious, is your ex-husband collect SSI or SSDI? They usually give SSDI to the working mother of kids whom their dads not working and collect SSDI.

I think that you could get a SSI or SSDI with a Medicare. If you are currently working, they might not give you the checks.

A food stamp is a terrible program because it tells you that you must buy the food within 5 days (?). I had a food stamp 5 years ago for a short time, and the program was very flexible time. Now, it is a very strict and very limited of days. I believe that the stamps are now worthless because it is not enough money to buy the food so you have to use your SSI/SSDI to buy the food.

By the way, I called and requested to stop receiving my food stamp so they mailed me the form to sign my name. Before I sign it on the form, I caught a fine print that says that it will be automatically included on SSI to surrender up so I did not want to mail the form. Finally, my food stamp is stopped - whew! That was five years ago.

Some say that SSI is bad. Well, it is better than no money. I do not mind that they receive their SSI or SSDI. (Some Congress people are doing their dirty money business anyway.)

Medicaid is very risky because it may take your house away in a specific age. Some people say 45 years old and some other say 65 years old. I don't have the exact information, but you should read the fine prints before you sign up for a Medicaid or Medicare.

I think that jazzy, shel90 and Phillips are right... (see their post)

Look for a Social Security Administration building within your area and apply there. They will want you to go to an audiologist for proof that you are deaf.

As for getting a job while on SSI, yes that will affect your SSI income. With SSI, you cannot earn more on your job than you get for SSI every month.. if you do, your ssi will be cut down and you will have to pay SSI back however amount that you were overpaid.

SSI -is- a pain in the rear end, TBH.

Also, how much you would get under SSI will vary because it would depend on your state's government regulations, as well as how much you're paying a month for rent, if you own vehicles, etc.

On the application form, it actually asks you how much money you have in your bank account AND on your person.. like if you have any cash on yourself when you apply. I've always found that part to be asinine. *shrugs*

That is not fair to your own mother because she paid for you and you expect to get away? Guess your mom didn't get your appreciation, sad.

sara1981 -

Can you put your SSI automatically goes to your bank without receiving your checks in the mail? Your mother won't able to touch your money. Just make sure that your name on your bank card without your mother's name on it. You might consider to put your father's name on yours in case if you are sick or emergency. It is hard to trust one of your family especially money.

I never had a problem with my SSI and bank. I use my credit card to pay my bills thru the bank online. Do not use a debit card - never. Use your credit card like Visa, MasterCard, Discover, etc.

Dixie, if you don't have state medical coupon u may first apply for SSI or SSDI-if u have had worked at least 5 yrs (my friend has only about 5 yrs working got qualified for SSDI! I knew alot people said at least 10 years not true, maybe different states-different coworkers giving approval, worth a try) SSA office where u applied for SSDI or SSI they will pay u for audiotory/ENT also ur trip for gas or taxi too.
good luck!

Only problem is that due to my HH I have lost jobs and such. It is quite frustrating to think that I will have to spend the next 10 years living with my parents and scrounging change just to get my own bills paid.

Around here it is very very hard for a single mother to make it on her own without assistance from child support or government assistance.

I have an audiogram around here from last summer and it has sufficient proof that I am deaf in my left ear and HH in my right ear.

I just hope I can find me some government help to get back on my feet and when things are more financially stable I can get off gov't assistance without having to pay them back for any overpayments.

Right now I am working less than 40hrs but more than 30 hrs. a week at my chicken plant job. I have no other jobs as of right now, but I am looking into getting something in the evenings after the 4th of July.

You might consider to check if there is an opening job(s) at the government building. I noticed that many deaf people work for the state and goverment agencies. Do you have some skills from a college?

If you cannot stand with your parents, you might want to sign up for a housing that can be allowed handicapped and deaf people to rent there. It accepts only people who have a low salary. Some housing places are nice. What about HUD? (Look up on Google or other engine search websites.)

USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site - To find a job in your Gov't area. Good Luck!

PB Inspections - I worked for the insurance company as a house inspector. This insurance company is a flagship for all over the states.

Please let us know if you found a job. :fingersx:

That's bullshit.

Your food stamps doesn't have to be used up within 5 days as long as it is used up within 60 or 90 days (can't remember which).

Please check your facts before you go sprouting off your bullshit.

depending on location, some depends on county or state and they set their rules with food stamp, maybe his area is true, never know.

Right now I do have a full time job and a kinda sorta on an as-needed basis second job.

I do have skills from college, I have one year of college under my belt. I took a reading/writing test at VR when I first applied and they said my reading and writing level is beyond the college level and my math is at the junior high level (typical for me).

So yeah I do have some skills I hope to put to good use. I just dont want to be too job jumpy and people feel like - oh she won't stay so lets not hire her to begin with even though she has nice skill sets.

I did look into HUD a couple years back and according to their charts at the time I was making a hair too much over the limit. I may look into it again and see what since I am making less now than I ever did at WFs.

I like your bullshit. Diehardbiker's comment is right. I would like to come to your place and use your foodstamp anytime. I'll take care of your stamps if you are not sure that could go up to 60 or 90 hours. Oops, never mind what I said.
