I just downloaded and installed Sprint Smartview Phone as Modem software. after installing it, I connected BB 8830 to laptop via USB. It works nicely and I was riding in Durango with my wife while using laptop in Illinois. It works nicely and was able to get around on internet. I did use speedtest.

Download: 623kpbs
Upload 109kpbs

Not bad but slow going thru internet. I downloaded AIM 6.8 and it show 49kpbs but dropped to 12kpbs when it's almost done downloading. (I reformatted and reinstall XP in my lappy that's why).

The Blackberry's CDrom that it came with it don't have it. So I had to google search and found it quickly. It's niiiice to have it while travelling at 70mph on highway  It show status screen ect..

here's pix

when you arrive metro city then you will see it will get gain up to EVDO board band

when out of boardband then it will drop to 1xRTT and it slower down.

If you have BB 8830 you can roaming GPRS/EDGE out of North America including in the curise ship. If you have SIM card with you. When you enter into Florida you will have full EVDO service area

Watch out if you use your phone on Cruise ship .. there no roaming agreement between phone and cruise ship that if you roam on using cruise ship tower that will cost a lot of money per minutes .. like 2.49 per minute or something

Catty's network is actually EVDO, not 1xRTT.

If 1xRTT, it need be under 150 kbps, especially around 50 kbps to 90 kbps for Sprint.

Florida? not all, even not in panhandle area like Panama City area and small town around this state, only struck with 1xRTT for Sprint but EVDO for Verizon.

if you use compact TTY with plug or use voice calls to your phone it will charge from 2.49 up to 4.99 per minute over GSM voice band depend on your home carrier's price.
GPRS data band is approxmately 12.00 to 14.00 per 1 MB depend on your home's carrier price for roaming.

You have to check your carrier's website or call your carrier's customer service about roaming price and you have to activate your phone to enable roam before you go travel out of country

If you are Sprint customers you can search the coverage there have color highlights 1xRTT for Pink 1xEVDO Orange 1xRTT Roaming is light gray 1xEVDO dark gray roaming. white is no coverage available

you can switch to manual like as "Roam Only" when you need to take boardband from another carriers when Sprint does not have boardband in the coverage.

you can visit the website: Sprint - Nationwide Coverage then select Data/Email/Multimedia for coverage

If you are Verizon customers to check coverage visit the webiste: Coverage Locator - Verizon Wireless select boardband/VCAST

if you are Alltel customers and call customer service to check coverage.

FYI Alltel and Verizon has been merged it will give you more coverage.

Merger Information - Alltel Wireless

I have test with my Sierra Wireless AC595U with Sprint. I use 1xEVDO Rev A I use it in Palm Beach Gardens, FL

here is:

Blackberry Curve 8830 use EVDO Rev 0 and it backward compability to 1xRTT

you can use data roaming in another town or city you can set your manual to Roam Only if Sprint does not provide boardband in town or city if another carrier have EVDO.

Sprint - Nationwide Coverage then select Data/Email/multimedia and enter your city and state then click Map it

Just like Coolguy1973fla said. He's absolutely correct. My BB did show 1x out in the country and once it reached within EVDO range, it changed to 1xEV. It's backward compatible.

Also I learned that BB does have glitch. Sometime there are EVDO signal in the area and it show 1x. I simply turn off and on wireless and it finally logged to 1xEV. It happen fequently if you are using browser in BB like if you jumps to different website then decide to back it up few times then it kicked EVDO signal out causing Browser error. So What I did was to disable the wireless and back on then go back to browser, It works fine but careful just let the browser finish loading then hit back again to give it a time.

Sorry to hear about service issue. I will keep my eye wide open on Sprint service issue.

You got 623 kbps? That's means your area is EVDO covered, I think coolguy thought it was 1xRTT, 1xRTT can go up to 150 mbps, or 90 kbps for Sprint.

BB isn't alone, it did happened to Mogul, it switched to 1X in EVDO area in every hour.

Hello Pacman! You can buy wireless modem USB in Verizon make sure you can use boardband/VCAST network coverage area is better to use VP as webcam relay or different multimedia plus you can get free roaming acess (Extended coverage) from another carrier to find 1xEVDO avilable

Verizon BroadbandAcess Data Plans:

5 Gigabytes $59.99 per month after 5GB you will charge .25 cents per 1MB each
50 MB $39.99 per month after 50MB .25 per 1MB each

you can have choice 1 or 2 year contract Security deposit is might be required when Verizon will check your credit history. if your credit history is excellent then you will not pay security deposit then you will have to pay $35 dollars activate fee if you are not business customer when you are business customer with Major Account Agreement you will be waived activate fee if you broke or quit your contact you will be charge just $175.00 if you got expired contact you will not be charge for terminate fee. if you order boardband card over the internet is discount and it will shipped to your home.

If you have Wifi card in your laptop you can find a free wifi at college or public wifi area and if you have wired high speed internet with wireless router and you will save your EVDO usage allowance. you can check your usage details in your Verizon online account with E-bill access plus the wireless card has usage monitor software.

if there is no boardband such as Wifi or Ethanet port available or no Verizon coverage or no cellular data roaming avilable in another smallest town , if you have built-in 56K modem or USB 56K modem to plug in phone jack via if you need to use 56K modem called Verizon's "Quick-2-Net" will be billed .25 cents per minute or 1 hour cost is $15.00 per hour will be billed in your Verizon Wireless bill. Quick-2-Net is too expensive to use.

be wisely. you will make sure you will not get overage charge..

Take care

I don't want use for VP or webcam relay, just need use this card for internet, media like youtube, google video or hulu and google earth or virtual earth, that require faster data.

I refuse to use to download on itunes except for podcast and music video that contain small data, no no for online gaming.

I wish that would be unlimited data, att and sprint does limited to 5 GB for broadband card.

My Macbook Pro don't have 56k modem since Apple removed it in last 4 years on all Mac, just like happened to floppy disk in 1998-1999.

if you want to get external usb supplies like floppy or 56K modem because your macbook pro is slim design and better technology to elinmate embedded 56k modem and embedded floppydisk drive. when you are not use then just unplug external devices and it will save energy for spend more hours. floppy disk drive will no longer but 56K will still there but it is external only because some boardband is not available in area but internal 56K for laptop has been discontiuned for reason for re-design for laptop's case

I have Sprint Boardband I was pay 60 dollars a month for unlimited. I will not change the plan, I stay long as service

f I quit the service the old plan will not be re-newal again when I re-join Sprint then I will get 5GB/month with Sprint Network and If I use roaming limit 300mb/ month for 60 dollars a month then it will overage like as 25 cents for one megabyte (mb) each but Sprint decided to discontiune Unlimited Pricing plan to new customers but if you sign new pricing plan is 5GB cost 60 dollars a month.
but if you want everything unlimited $99 dollars a month because voice, data, sprint TV and everything.....

but it is waste money it is not worth about it for "Everything Unlimited Plan"

you better to manage for your usage detail. but I recommend your home wifi with wired internet service provider is better to use. if you need out of town you can use wireless card during ride on car, train and bus or go visit anywhere even there is no WiFi or unable to connect due to Wifi is locked up by owner.

when you save some usage on your boardband card then you can use public wifi as alternative.

Good luck

Interesting that even I'm in EVDO area, my laptop show CDMA 1xRTT no matter what. BB 8830 is showing 1xEV. Just wondering.
