Speech Therapy and lips reading!

I am trying to find someone to go for speech therapy and lips reading. I was
told that speech therapists do not teach lips reading! I know that it not true
as I had a speech therapist that did both when I had lesson in the 60's! She was really good , she had me reading lips on her sideway! Has anyone else had a speech therapist that taught lips reading too?

Thanks ! I was told I would have to see two people , one for lips reading and one for speech lessons! It seem like that could get confusing if both people did not agree on what kind if help I needed!

Curious why do you want more speech therapy so late in life? Why not take ASL instruction instead?
 
I think speech therapy can go a long ways, just as ASL.

As for me, my speech therapist never worked with me on lipreading. I picked it up through living life. Going to the store, conversing with co-workers, students, etc. It didn't take long to start picking up a lot. Having the experience of lipreading many people is likely better than learning from just one person, perhaps.
 
There are many software out there that teaches speechreading skills...maybe you can use one to supplement your speech lessons?
 
I had to learn lip reading on my own.

Speech therapy is something that I had very little because my mother had me taken out of the class, I do remember watching the teacher's mouth.

I have had speech therapy in the past but I really never got all help I needed. I wanted to brush up my lips reading as I like to go the city meetings and I have trouble hearing what being said. I did not get speech lesson until I was about 8 years old , my teachers would come to my home . My father got jealous when I started to to really like my teacher and he would fire them!. So I never was able to finish my therapy! People do have a hard understanding me on the phone at time and speech therapy could help me speak better.
ASL would be of no help for me when going to a city meeting to speak . I do speak at meetings about issues I am concerned about. I have no HOH or deaf friends and never did as a child . So I would no place to use ASL .

Thanks ! I will look into that! It would help to understand my granddaughter better too! She just notice my HA for the first time and wanted to know what it was and if it was hard to get in my ear! I thought that was smart question for a 4 years old to ask!
Once a girl wanted to know why I talked funny! I told I was HOH and wore a HA and show it to her. She thought for a few minutes , then told me to take my HA out of my ear and , told me to now talk , I did ! The girl said you still talk funny! The girl thought my HA made me talk funny!

What the HELL good is sign language going to do when I am talking on the phone!! Grow up! I said I like to got city meetings , I am the only one there that HOH , sign language is GOING TO BE USELESS! And when I need help in a store sign language is GOING TO BE USELESS ! I said I do NOT hang out with HOH or deaf people ! I have no need to learn sign language !

I guess my speech therapist spoiled me ! She got me lip reading . I just want to really be very good at lipreading , I can read lips now , but I want to be able to read lips when a person is standing sideway! I use to read my teacher and principal when they were talking in the class room! One day they realize what I was doing and cover their lips with their hands! Rat!

Speech therapists vary.

I had two that did these methods: I was taught how to test myself to see if I was speaking correctly without making it too obvious. Like for example if I wanted to hold my chin (with my thumb under my jaw) to see if I have glottal sounds correct, I would have to pretend I am thinking about something like as if I am reflecting on what someone said to me.

I was also taught how to read lips with those two therapists.

Then... I had five that did this: Cover up their mouths and speak through an asinine silk screen so I couldn't see their faces and discipline me if I didn't repeat what they said properly-- of course I could never hear what they were saying without being able to lipread.

Er, sign language interpreting is a public accommodation that any business / organization / group (save for religious) must provide. I can't imagine a nonreligous meeting in which you wouldn't be entitled to intepreters.

If you need help in a store.. ever heard of pen and paper?

I'm all for you learning to or improving your speechreading skills. But please don't insult our choices by saying that sign language is 'useless.' It seems like you're very defensive about your hearing loss and want to prove yourself as 'less disabled' than us- which is not cool.

i've been thinking for weeks now...

what if SL would had still developed without the deaf?
maybe...
we wont know.

my theory? it could had.


one day, the world will get a click. 100 years after that, you might find SL as POPULAR (that's the reason why ppl dont know it, because it is not) as today's lingua franca (meaning, english)

Sign languages can be languages of choice.
