I need to write a 10 page paper about the general opinion on Speech Pathologists, positive or negative, and I was hoping I could get some opinions :)

Thank you!

That's nice. Are you studying to be a Speech Patchologist?

Actually, no, I'm double majoring in both Special and Deaf Education. I'm really excited, :) all of my classes are becoming more centered around these two fields, it's amazing! For one of my classes, I have that paper, and this just seemed like an amazing resource to use because I feel like I can get really good feedback :)

And, why not start by introducing yourself? :hmm:

Fair enough, my name is Renee, I'm 22 working on my double major (Special and Deaf Ed) I have such passion for both of these fields, and I cannot wait to get out there and actually start working because I love kids, always have. I think that they have such an innocence and enthusiam that gets lost as we get older. I also think that at heart I'm a big kid myself :)

And what do you want to know?

Hi, Missfab. Are you in Richardson, Texas? I'm in Texas so that's why I ask.

Here's my opinion of speech pathologists: If they would just take some ASL classes and learn a little bit about Deaf culture, it would do the whole world a lot of good.

My opinon of speech pathologists is that they seem to be very focused on the idea that THE BEST route to go is always the "healthy normal" route. They view ASL and other alternative methods of communication as a last resort.
It's like they view a person who has semi decent verbal skills as "higher achieving" then someone who can function on a Harvard level using ASL or another method. Speech pathologists need to promote a FULL TOOLBOX. Yes, hearing articulation kids need to learn how to say sounds correctly....but other kids need a full toolbox so they can suceed with the tools that are right for them!

I wish more speech pathologists wouldnt discourage parents not to use ASL and see ASL as a necessity for language development.

I hold little regard for speech pathologists due to their unwillingness to help with alternative ways of communication. Kind of like everyone has been saying, I just worded it a bit different.

The thing is....why are speech therapists so fixtated on having dhh kids in an eternal speech therapy session? That's what oral only IS....an eternal speech therapy session. It is FRUSTRATING and boring. Plus it doesn't equalize dhh kids too well. We still have deaf voices (and many hearing people seem to assume that deaf voices=retarded) It's a great tool.....but I'd have more respect for speech therapists if they really promoted oral skills, instead of an eternal speech therapy session.
