COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -
There are currently 44 men awaiting execution on South Carolina's death row.
But if the order came tomorrow to carry out one of their deaths, the state wouldn't be able to do it because it has run out of a lethal injection drug.
Corrections Director Bryan Stirling says the state's supply of pentobarbital -- the anesthetic that comes first in the state's three-drug protocol -- expired more than a year ago and was discarded.
The state has tried to buy more, but Stirling says he's found no companies willing to sell it.
