A Utah company whose video conferencing technology is used by tens of thousands of deaf people to communicate is trying to figure out who would be base enough to hack into their system and flood tens of thousands of deaf customers with fake conference calls.

Officials with Sorenson Communications say since October they have dealt with a plague of prank calls to its point-to-point video calling service. The company provides video conferencing calls to the deaf free of charge to allow deaf people to communicate via sign language to others.

Sorenson public relations director Ann Bardsley said on one day, tens of thousands of false calls were sent to Sorenson videophones. On the user end, deaf customers think they have missed a call and that their unit is somehow malfunctioning.

The unknown hackers have affected some 30,000 video phones installed in the homes and workplaces of deaf customers across the United States, according to the company.

Ron Burdett, vice president of community relations for Sorenson Communications, said deaf customers who use sign language rely on his company's service for daily communications. Such interruptions he called "inconvenient and distressing."

Hackers have done good things, too. For examples, hackers have unlocked mobile/cell phones, which includes the iPhone that could only be used on AT&T network in the US.

Most DVD players are now region-free, probably thanks to hackers. I don't know about you, but I wasn't very happy when I realized my DVD player could not play movies that I brought from overseas. Fortunately, I was able to copy the DVD - thanks to hackers.

The Xbox console... Thanks to hackers, the console can be converted into an awesome multimedia station. Plus, you can now use it to play emulated machines - many of which was also reversed engineered. Eg. PS2 emulator.

There are many other things that have been hacked..:)

Companies spend so much money on R&D to make things hack proof, but they are wasting their time, especially considering its them vs the world. I see that anything with electronics can be hacked - its just a matter of time when it will be hacked.
 
I git miffed with ignorant people labelin' "hackers" cos it's too bloody broad and often misjudgment. Hackers are usually good people such as White Hats and Blue Hats are harmless (non-criminals) whilst Grey Hats borderline legality, often frankly admitted. They actually do help us improve with security exploits, vulnerabilities, rootkits, anti-virus... to name a few. By the way, they get paid! Most of us hate Black Hats (criminals) and they are the one that needs to get a frikkin' life. However, any colours are NOT the case here. Sorenson did mention "flood with fake calls." That's "spammers". What? You never heard of video phone spam? We have email spam, IM spam, wiki spam, spam in blogs, mobile phone messagin' spam, internet forum... anything electronic even junk fax transmission. Again, spammers needs to git a frikkin' life!

How did they hack the calls? First of all, there's no hack and let me rephrase the question fer ya. How did VP users git the fake calls? C'arn, ya can't be dat stoopid or are ya? No wurries, allow me to educate. Learn how to protect yerself against spammers. What do ya see the very first thing on the left column of Sorenson VRS? Now go there and tell yerself if you can "collect" names and vp numbers? Look at those A B C D E and so on. Wasn't that ridiculously easy? I'd blame Sorenson fer not securin' on the web. Also blame yerself if you provided yer own VP number out. If yers is on the list. You can either modify yer numbers to Request VP Number or Remove Me from the list.

Agreed, hey!! don't forget Crackers too!! They cracks softwares. I love Crackers LOL and they're good people to let you play with software for free before you decide to buy it... I do support Hackers as long as they do good thing to reverse engineer ect (who care if it's illegal but as long as you get device or computer to work with that it never worked before). Spammer should have death penalty cuz they clogs up our email servers!!! Grrr
