As I've posted in my introduction, I am a "hearie." I'm new to deaf culture and I find it very interesting. Lately I have been thinking about how deaf people live and what if would be like to live with them.

Then I started thinking, what would it be like to be married to a deaf person? I think it would be interesting and fun, but I also think it may be challenging. I don't have any deaf friends, much of my activities revolve around sound, and I'm afraid if I did my spouse would be excluded.

So, do any of you have advice for someone who may be interested in a deaf person? If you do I would like to know and am excited to learn more about deaf culture.

As a hard of hearing individual married to a hearing man, I'm sure he considers our marriage interesting and fun - at least he'd better! - but it has nothing to do with my hearing status. It's about the people, not the abilities, nearly all of the time.

Are you actually interested in a specific deaf person or are you just speaking hypothetically?

Hypothetically, because you did not reveal much about yourself here....'.that is good.

Should a white woman start a relationship with a black guy because she find Black Culture interesting?

Hmmmmmm

My friend Wasteland, smile. I was a bit concerned about the way you speak about "the deaf." I know your comments were innocent and probably sincere but it struck me that you stated you had no deaf friends and think if you married a deaf person it would be fun and exciting. Let me assure you, in any marriage or relationship it is communication, or lack of, that will make or break it. You also already acknowledge you had fears your "deaf partner" might be excluded from things because you live in a hearing world. I do not mean this with any malice and do not judge you in any way but with that said I got the feeling you could have been talking about getting a rare pet. I might be off on this but that is just the way it struck me. I urge you to look deeply within yourself and ask what is the reason you are "CONFLICTED" about the deaf. I assure you we are not "oddities" to show your friends, and why look to a deaf friend or partner for "fun and excitment?" I wish you well and hope you find what ever it is that brings you Peace and happiness.

Had a friend once who dated people based on what she was interested in. She would tell me, "I want to learn how to ride horses," and the next thing I knew her new BF was a cowboy who was teaching her to ride. Had she wanted to learn ASL she would have hooked up with a Deaf guy.

It was her way. It worked for her. She led an interesting life.

No telling where she is now or what she is doing, but I'll bet some guy is teaching it to her.

Of course she should. Ideally, with more than one black guy and several black women. How else would she learn more about the culture she is interesting in?

The first thing that popped into my head is that this sounds like a orgy for the BF. :giggle:

I don't limit "relationship" to mean as in a dating relationship. I was thinking of relationship as in friendship. Which could, of course, lead to a dating relationship...or not.

That was my second thought but I thought this'd be funny though.

I remember heaving into gales of laughter (My laugh is known to be loud and noticeable at any time) which no one understood when I heard a young man asked, "What is your relationship with the girl over there?"

To which he replied indignantly, "I don't HAVE a relationship with her. She is my sister."
