Hi all

I am after some advice really.... have been HOH since my 20's and have been managing pretty OK with Siemens Prisma hearing aids issued in the UK, and am fortunate that I can lip read quite well.

I am now living in Australia and following a severe infection at Christmas have found a real decline in my hearing. Am beginning to feel quite isolated, and find myself sitting on the sidelines instead of mucking in as I would normally!

I have seen my ENT specialist today.... I am now severely deaf in my right ear and profoundly deaf in my left ear and he is referring me on for assessment for cochlear implant in my left ear. I am therefore trying to readup on everything regarding cochlear at the mo.

My audiologist at the hearing clinic has suggested that I try new hearing aids for my right ear, she is suggesting I trial "Phonak Nadia V UP".

I am wondering what your thoughts are regarding Phonak Nadia V UP, will it offer me much more than my existing Siemans Prisma? Will the cochlear give me back much sound in my left ear?

I thank you in advance.

the naida is a hearing aid with frequency transposition meaning it takes sounds which you can't hear in one frequency and puts it into another. It's a bit weird at first...but you get used to it..I have the naida v ups as well and went for a CI evaluation not long ago but I have too much "useful" hearing left lol

For whatever reason, I thought you had the SPs....huh...

The Choclear will give you lots of hearing in the left ear but not sure I would say "restore" . I've had my implant active for a couple of months now and so far very happy with it. Last visit to audi, I was up to 98% comprehension with both CI and Ha and 8? % with just the CI. That is a tremendous improvement over what I used to be able to comprehend. Sounds are different but the brain gets used to it eventually. Highly recommend the CI and I have the one that is made there in your country. Loved the Americas Cup when it was in Perth. Good luck.

Ditto to what Rampratt had said.

Had mine for nearly 2 years.

I am from Blighty.... hope life in austraila is treating you well. I have few friends that emirgated to New Zealand and Austraila.

Rampratt, I race yachts!, I won a memorable race from Wellington to Sydney!

oops ur right jenny i had to check i have the naida v sp's not up's my bad what I had meant to say and the point was I had the naida's lol

I have a CI and wear a Naida V UP in my unimplanted ear. The Naida does not really do much for me except give me a little bass. You can forget about speech discrimination. I do better when someone is talking to me on my CI side. The last time I did some testing I did better in noise with just the CI. I would try the Naida because everyone is different.

I third (or whatever) the suggestion to try the aids. How people respond to hearing devices is very indivdual.
Do you guys have SUMOs in Oz? Are you seeing an audi who is very experianced with fitting young dhh folks?
