Snake wasn't on the menu of a Missouri restaurant, but that's what patrons got -- along with a side of rattled nerves.

A reptile, thought to be a boa constrictor, was brought into an eatery in Nixa, Missouri, this week, sending some fleeing.

Lisa Loeffelholz told CNN affiliate KYTV that she spotted a man and a woman holding the snake and "it started to slither down into the booth behind her."

Loeffelholz said she notified the restaurant manager -- who said the couple insisted the snake was a service animal and the restaurant should allow it to stay.

But just the sight of the woman apparently pulling the animal and then handing it over to the man at the table was enough to make Loeffelholz confront the snake handlers about their slippery excuse.

"He said, 'It's my service animal. And I'm allowed to have it because it helps me with my depression,'" she told the affiliate.

The snake may have had a calming effect on the couple, but by no means can it legally be deemed a service animal.

The American with Disabilities Act states "only dogs are recognized as service animals."

And if the snake posed a concern for public safety, then patrons could have notified police or animal control, according to Nixa city's communications director, Jill Finney.

"Management didn't know what to do, because they didn't want to violate anybody's rights, and that's understandable," Finney told the affiliate.

Noooo.....

It would make me never want to go to a restaurant again.

I used to walk around with a bearded dragon on my shoulder...into shops, cofee ect what ever...
A friend did the same with his snake around his neck.
I dunno
A human being fleeing from a site of a reptile seems prob to have other issues going on upstairs...
But
Meh

I'm with you Botti.

Funny, my youngest daughter flips out crazy over any kind of bug. She even hates butterflies. We went to lunch and she wanted me to go into this snake shop with her. I would have bet a million dollars that she would never put a snake around her neck.....she did. I was outside looking in at her shaking.

I bet if we saw what was going on the kitchen we may never want to eat out again . I rather have a snake in a restaurant than rats or mice in the kitchen.

emotional support animal for snake - yeah, I can see that. BUT - emotional support animals and SERVICE animals are two separate types and have different views under the law...emotional support do not have public access. Therapy dogs <a third type> only have access to certain institutions for which they're trained - a certain hospital, for example - and do not perform tasks -for- someone else.
Only service animals have full public access and perform tasks for someone else. ONLY dogs and mini horses are legally service animals in the U.S.

Many times people get the three types mixed up and sometimes public does also think their non-therapy animal *should* go with them everywhere but that's technically inaccurate. And I know we've discussed people who pass off their animal as a "therapy" or "service dog" when they're not either one.

I personally like snakes and wouldn't bother me to have one in a restaurant if handled appropriately and with someone as a "pet" < as opposed to a wild/outside snake who found its way in>.
Though I don't know about them being in the kitchen.

But I think that person in the article was taking advantage or ignorant.

That is so true ,emotional support animals are not allowed in public places ,
I read about veterans with PTSD not being allowed to bring their
emotional support animals public places and the vets get upset. I think the vets are being given the wrong info by the people training their dogs. I was told emotional support dogs were not allowed in public places
when I was getting my hearing dog , he was allowed to go everywhere expect in people private homes if said "No" and he couldn't go into a surgery room with me when Iwas getting shots for pain.

My doc don't mind them he got something called pat dog.you pat it and lowers blood pressure.Dog mooches around normally sits under desk in reception area he stays out of way unless you want go pat it.He also had cat that would not move from reception area or come sit on your knee..Most people liked it

Damn I should had the doc paid $ 100. for a 2 minutes visit with my service dog. :giggle: The nurses at the lab at the hospital loved Finlay and if he was not with me they wanted to know were is my dog !
