Governor Gary Locke signs a bill that prevents the sale of certain games to anyone under the age of 17.

Washington state governor Gary Locke has signed bill HB 1009 into law. The new law prohibits the sale of any games depicting violence against law-enforcement officials to anyone under the age of 17. If a retail outlet is caught in violation of the new law, it will be fined $500. This action by the Washington state government has prompted responses from both the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA), which plans to challenge the law, and the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA).

"The IDSA, which represents the entire $10 billion interactive entertainment software industry, is disappointed that Governor Locke signed this bill," said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the IDSA. "It's not only unnecessary and unconstitutional, but it clearly won't solve the issue at which it's apparently aimed."

"The nation's leading retailers of computer and video games were dismayed to see that Washington State HB 1009 made it through the legislative process and then disappointed to find that Governor Gary Locke had signed it into law," said Hal Halpin, president of the IEMA. "Over the past several years retail members of the IEMA have made significant and voluntary investment and progress in working with parents in stemming the sale of inappropriate games to minors. This law does nothing to aid in our ongoing effort, but instead acts as a clear violation of the First Amendment and a dubious effort of censorship. We remain committed to our customer's rights and firmly believe that parents are the best and most directly responsible party to determine appropriate entertainment for their children. To that end, we have chosen to join our trade partners in preparing a formal complaint."

Steel: If you want to hear my opinon...i think this is pretty pathetic. What good will that do when there are already zillions of kids under 17 that has already played such voilent and gory games? Heck, I'm not 17 anymore but it just seems ridulious and it is damn near IMPOSSIBLE to ban games off the whole nation...if that happens then millions AND millions of computer and software workers related to videogame development would lose jobs...and videogames are made for FUN. Many adults always complain that vidoegame companies are the one to blame on school shootings and others when they have children that played videogames and they don't even KNOW what games they played! whoo-eee what great parents they WERE...

I have been playing games ever since I was 6 and has played alot of voilence games ever since...I've played Doom when I was 10. I've played Hexen when I was 12. I played Duke Nukem when I was 13. As games are getting popular, they increase more violence and gore upon with that. why? violence always catch everyone's attention, giving it one main reason..."entertainment."
It is not the game companie's job to tell parents to watch over their kids...because it is NOT their kids...and they have enough problems of their own to solve rather than being blamed by some parents whining and complaining that their child went on a shooting spree and shit like that...they are getting to be one of the biggest idiots in history when they NEVER even noticed that ESRB has been found in the early 1990s and started giving ratings to games since 1991. (during the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis days) and the battle is still going on today..."BAN GAMES BAN GAMES BAN GAMES!" honestly, i laughed so hard when i hear complaints like that, because it is NOT going to happen...ppl make games to make money and games are made for entertainment...wheter you like it or not. Parents are just too embrassassed to admit that they are actually the ones to be BLAMED for letting their child play the game that they don't EVEN know what the game is about... what such retards.

There are proably no good parents anymore...there are proably many ppl who don't really care...there are proably many people who are just greedy, selfish and stupid.

Games are maed to be fun and have great experience in techogoly and all that...and NO WAY will it be possible to be banned like that...lol what a lousy plan.

I believe we have freedom of speech, and freedom of purchase and all that...so if they have a problem with that...just tell 'em to fuck off and get lost.

Well, they're banning the sale. Not banning the rights to play. So just get someone over 18 to buy it for you. Then you can play it all you want.

It's the PARENTS that choose the games kids play from the ratings as long as reasonable and maturity of kid

and one thing how come they slap 500 fine for selling M-rated games to minors when they DONT do the same thing for R-Rated movie tixs to minors that is a fock'n double standard letting movies get away scoot-free and penalty the game industry

 world of politics :ugh:

Porn and violent games are totally different.
Yes they are. and it only depends on how violent it gets...

I can let my 11 year old son play T-rated games because he is almost a teenager and when he's a teenager, he can play M-rated games because he will be 17 in a few more years...it's just better that way to experience the learning of reality and fantasy...and what's right and what's wrong...as long as my son takes it seriously and focus that they are just games anyway

Of course but I was talking about "selling which is not right for children that affects thier lifes

For example, For porn movies, Children should be getting pregencies without knowing nothing about Sex educations. How did that happen? Of course porn tolls children's lifes That's why its illegeal to sell those porn movies to the age of 18 or under or thr age of 21 or under in some states. That's what I explained that basic understanding my points. :)
