I want to teach my puppy to understand some basic signs (food, water, play etc.). Any suggestions?
 
Just keep practicing the sign and reinforcing it with the correct behavior. Small treats if he sits when you sign "sit", etc.
 
Same as training with voice. Repitition. Make sure you have his attention. My Rupert respons to about 10 commands vocie or sign.
 
Oh, if you are going to do commands you need a 'look at me' command.



Besides that for commands (not fun stuff) always make the animal comly the first time and praise after he/she gets it right, just like verbal for animals.

"Sit" *push but down* "Good Dog" *pat pat*

You should expect your dog to follow your command w/o repeating it.

Otherwise he'll learn that its o.k. to ignore your commands because he gets a second or third chance.
