I don't know if you feel the way I do. But it really bothers me
that people "take" away from our culture. They take ASL but
they don't accept us? How can they do that? You see all these niffy Sign2Me, Smart Baby Signs and all of these programs making a huge profit on ASL. Yet when it's us, we have a reason that we sign because of our deafness it's they can't be bothered. Not in the mainstreamed schools, programs that we may attend. Yet its ok for hearing people to learn ASL, suddenly it's acceptable in the "hearing world" just as long as you aren't HofH/Deaf.

I understand what you are saying and i am sure you are not alone in those feelings to. But all of us hearies arnt the same. I would really hope that people that are using ASL programs with babies will eventually see the other values of having sign. Hopfully when that child grows up and do meet deaf and hoh folks they will be more accepting because they do have the ability to sign somewhat and then they will be able to build on that knowledge. Its very clear that many people are possibly making tons of money off of ASL and well it would be nice for those who are native signers, along with hearies who sign and are involved in the community and culture would get a little reconition and acceptance....

Agreed on what jamielee said...perhaps this move will make the next generation have more open minds?

I've never understood this! They tell parents of hearing children that they should teach their babies to sign so they can communicate earlier and to stimulate the children's minds, but they tell parents of deaf children that teaching their kids to sign will make it harder for them to function. How does that make any sense?

I truly hate it when someone learns I'm an interpreter and then wants to go off about how they heard how great it is to teach babies sign language. I want to say "Too bad you aren't an audiologist" but usually I have to be polite...
