It's usually recommended that signature images be no bigger than 500 pixels wide and 100 pixels high. Since the avatar limit is 100 x 100 pixels and everything else on the left is about 200 pixels, that leaves about 500 pixels for your typical user who usually has his or her monitor settings at 800 x 600 pixels.
