Hey All,

This is my first post so... here we go

Does anyone know of good training places in the Sydney north area for sign language? I was never taught sign language and no wish to learn it after 25 years. It feels awkard being a deaf person and not be able to communicate properly to another deaf person who use sign language as there main source of communication.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Regards,

Mark

G'day Mark

I am a fellow aussie from Canberra. How can I help you?

And speaking about AUSLAN - you could go and visit the site, www.auslan.org.au or suggest to go to a TAFE course at a nearby campus in Sydney to refresh the sign language?

and yes, what shezzbeav has referred you to the DEN site, it is a good start.

Thanks, Sherrie!

Australians, I'm curious as if the AUSLAN and NZSL both signs almost same? How difference?

I went to NZ once as a '90 DeafOlympian and met some NZ deaf citizens... it was a cool experience. Wanted to go to Australian after the Games but didn't have the opportunity at the time, darn.

Yet I did meet some Australians there but hardly remembered how their signs were like.

Finger spelling is the same but signs are a bit different - i think ~SG~ can answer the question for you since she is formerly from new zealand.

Ok, I see, thanks Jacob.

Hope that SG could give me the answer with the NZ part.

Fingerspelling is the same but the sign for each words some are same some are different for AUSLAN and NZSL.

Am a NZSL user so been to aussie and seen the differences in sign same for ASL too when i went over there in 2004.

Fingerspelling is the same for Auslan and NZSL. As for sign language both Auslan and NZSL are different.

Most signs are the similar but different meanings/words for it.

 hey babybliss, i did my 1st ever Auslan Class through Den ( deaf education network) im not sure if they run long courses but there is short 8 wk class (1 or 2 days a wk )or 1:1 courses running every term altho your prefered location might not be available but the course is pretty ok. theres auslan 1,2,3 and approx 8-15 students in the class. u'll slowly learn from colours to numbers... descriptions even how to joke around etc etc... n its up to u wether u remenber it or not hahahaa (theres no test, so no studying)
just contact them via tty or email n see how it goes, i think the classes for this term started already coz i havent enrolled n im too late too
